Movie Box Review

The Genie Award Winners have been announced and Polytechnique sweeps as the big winner, taking in 9 of the 11 awards it was nominated for including Best Motion Picture, Director, Lead Actress and Supporting Actor. Other multiple winning films include Fifty Dead Men Walking (Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction) and Grande ourse: La clé des possibles / The Master Key (Make-Up & Original Score). Surprizes of the night include only 1 win for NURSE.FIGHTER.BOY (Original Song) out of it's 10 nominations and I was also really I hoping for Pontypool to take home either of the awards it was nominated, but no luck there. Special awards of the night include the Claude Jutra award going to Xavier Dolan for J'ai tué ma mère / I Killed My Mother, Golden Reel (highest grossing film) to De père en flic / Father and Guns and Academy Special Acheivement Award to Mel Hoppenheim.

The broadcast of the awards included fun retrospectives of previous actors & director acceptance speeches over the past 30 years which made the show well worth catching on IFC. They had a webcast over at CBC.ca but unfortunately neither that cast nor the televised event were live, and in the age of twitter that meant very few surprizes once it came to watching the show. But, still had a lot of great moments and acceptances speeches in the 1 hour broadcast where there showed 8 of the awards being handed out. And the awards went to....

I'll be honest. The only award I was strongly invested in tonights Oscar's was Kathryn Bigelow for director The Hurt Locker. And she won. Yes! After that, it's all cake & icing of which there was a lot. The Hurt Locker went to pick up a total of 6 wins: Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Film Editing, Sound Editing & Sound Mixing. After that the most wins went to Avatar with Art Direction, Cinematography & Visual Effects. Two films came in at 2 wins each: Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire and Up. After that, any film that won was for one award. Overall there were very few surprizes and the show ran pretty smoothly.

I enjoyed the Best Actor and Best Actress nomination introductions from their peers, which was added to the awards last year. This always feels like a heartfelt exchange from peer to peer and gives the audience a lovely insight into the person, and also gives us more time with each the actors. I hope they keep this up. I like the nod to horror films, which was included as a sort of 'usually they go unacknowledged', but a lot of the clips were from really old films. The montage for the people we've lost was very beautiful though, James Taylor sang as they showed clips from each of the artist works along with their picture, name and what their did. Very classy. John Hughes had a separate tribute earlier in the night with clips along with reflections from people he'd worked with, which was also really well done. Overall the show ran about 3 hours and 35 min, slightly longer than noted on the tv guide but as always I wished they've just make it a bit longer and let everyone have their moment to say their acceptance speech. They might have decided to cut those short to allow more time for doing the ten best picture intros.

Slightly Bizarre Moments:

• An Education, best picture nominee introduced by Colin Firth - would have been nice to see it introduced by a woman consider the context of the film, even though Colin Firth did a lovely job.
• Almost all the short film directors and/or awards that went to more than 1 recipient were cut off / music'd out. They often cut to someone in the audience while doing this so it was less noticeable.
• Some of the nominees names were said aloud, sometimes it was pre-recorded. Saw no pattern here as to why, other than sometimes noms were read really quickly.
• During the Animated Film nominees, they had fake-y interviews with the characters in the film. The fact that The Princess & the Frog interview was with characters other than the female protagonist says everything you need to know about the film.
• Ryan Reynolds introduced The Blind Side, Best Picture nominee as “It’s a true story, as American as Football”. Y'all know he's Canadian - right?
• Thank you cam speeches are available online here (and are preceded by 30 second ad. 30 sec times 24 awards.. that's 12 minutes of ads if there is one in each category).

The winners have been announced and Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire sweeps this years Spirit Awards winning best film, director, first screenplay and both lead and supporting actress . Wow. Crazy Heart takes home lead actor and first feature award and A Serious Man picks up cinematography and the Robert Alman Awards.

The winners have been announced and Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire sweeps this years Spirit Awards winning best film, director, first screenplay and both lead and supporting actress . Wow. Crazy Heart takes home lead actor and first feature award and A Serious Man picks up cinematography and the Robert Alman Awards.

The Spirit Awards were aired live and uncut on IFC on Friday March 5, 2010 at 11pm EST/8pm PST in the States but not here in Canada. Maybe next year! See more at the Spirit Awards Website

It's the 30th anniversary of the Genies this year! How exciting for Canadian Film! Today the nominations were announced and I'm thrilled to see that Pontypool is up for three awards: Director (Bruce McDonald), Lead Actor (Stephen McHattie) and Adapted Screenplay (Tony Burgess). The heavy hitting nominee this year is Polytechnique which leads with 11 nominations. Wow. Shorts were also well represented this year, including nominations for the beautiful and haunting Danse Macabre in the live action category as well as animated delights of Runaway, The Spine and Vive la rose. The nominees always remind me that there is so much Canadian film I miss if it isn't released in Toronto, this year that looks like the titles I'll have to find are and De père en flic, 3 Saisons, Les grandes chaleurs, Babine, 5150, rue des OrmesGrande ourse: La clé des possibles. C'est la vie!

The results are in and The Hurt Locker sweeps the BAFTA's winning 6 awards: Best Film, Director for Kathryn Bigelow, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Sound. Absolutely fantastic news, and thrilling to see Bigelow take home the award. Avatar won 2 awards this evening for Visual Effects and Production. Also in the 2 winner category is The Young Victoria which took home Costumes along with Make Up & Hair.

The acting categories had a combination of locks in the supporting categories with winners being Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. Lead acting awards went to home base talent of Colin Firth for A Single Man and Carey Mulligan for An Education. I couldn't be more thrilled as they were excellent lead performances. Twilight fans can rejoice as Orange British Rising Star award went to Kristen Stewart.

Also thrilled to see director Duncan Jones get well deserved love with being awarded Outstanding debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon.

Also exciting to see Outstanding British Film go to Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank which opened in Toronto this week, and award for Best Film Not in the English Language went to A Prophet which opens in Toronto on March 5, 2010.

The results are in and The Hurt Locker sweeps the BAFTA's winning 6 awards: Best Film, Director for Kathryn Bigelow, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing and Sound. Absolutely fantastic news, and thrilling to see Bigelow take home the award. Avatar won 2 awards this evening for Visual Effects and Production. Also in the 2 winner category is The Young Victoria which took home Costumes along with Make Up & Hair.

The acting categories had a combination of locks in the supporting categories with winners being Mo'Nique for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire and Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. Lead acting awards went to home base talent of Colin Firth for A Single Man and Carey Mulligan for An Education. I couldn't be more thrilled as they were excellent lead performances. Twilight fans can rejoice as Orange British Rising Star award went to Kristen Stewart.

Also thrilled to see director Duncan Jones get well deserved love with being awarded Outstanding debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Moon.

Also exciting to see Outstanding British Film go to Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank which opened in Toronto this week, and award for Best Film Not in the English Language went to A Prophet which opens in Toronto on March 5, 2010.
