The Sked: Cable Ratings December 6-12

The lack of schedule flexibility (as NBC has with its late season Sunday Night Football games) has hurt the Monday and Thursday night football franchises recently.  When match-ups feature teams with little to no playoff chances, ratings drift downward (although Monday and Thursday Night Football still sit atop the weekly cable ratings chart).

Discovery's American Chopper and MTV's Teen Mom share the honor of being the top unscripted entertainment program on cable this week, with History's Pawn Stars and A&E's Storage Wars not far behind.

FX's Sons of Anarchy remains the top scripted program on cable.  HBO's Boardwalk Empire concluded a terrific season with a 1.3 rating (matching last week's season high).  While not True Blood or Sopranos numbers, the series features writing and acting that matches HBO's best dramas.  As Mitch Salem pointed out, the preview of Luck immediately following Boardwalk crashed to a 0.4 rating (below the threshold for the weekly chart).  Next week, Showtime's Dexter concludes its creaky season (mercifully) and should be able to crack a 1 rating with any luck.

The Sked: Cable Ratings October 25-31

ESPN's Monday Night Football rebounded to more normal levels last night and moved back into its usual #1 spot on the cable Adult 18-49 rating chart.  (Kansas City upset San Diego in overtime.)  On AMC, Walking Dead is still the top scripted program on cable this week, but the 3.1 rating, while still very good, is down considerably from the past few weeks (which are now listed on the right side of the chart below).

FX's Sons of Anarchy is steady at a 2.0 rating, while the Wednesday FX hit American Horror Story continues to grow nicely and is headed for that 2-rating level soon.  More disturbingly, MTV's Beavis & Butt-head returned to the cable landscape with a very solid 1.8 young adult rating.  I guess Newton Minnow was right.

THE SKED: "American Horror Story" Ratings Moderately Scary

Ratings for last night's premiere of AMERICAN HORROR STORY on FX are promising, if not overwhelming.  The show's 10PM initial airing was watched by about 2 million people 18-49, which should equal something like a 1.5 rating in that demo; when the night's 2 rebroadcasts are added, the number goes to 3.2 million people or around a 2.4 rating.

A couple of comparisons:  if rebroadcasts are included, this is slightly up from last season's Sons of Anarchy average on FX, which had about 3 million 18-49 viewers, but in an apples-to-apples comparison of the 10PM airing only, it's somewhat lower.  (However, as FX was quick to note, even the 10PM broadcast alone was higher than the 1.5 million 18-49s who watched the first broadcast of the Sons premiere, since that show built its audience over time.)  Comparing it within genre, though, the news is a bit less happy:  the first broadcast of the Walking Dead premiere on AMC was 80% higher than Horror Story's, with 3.6 million 18-49 viewers.

Of course, Walking Dead went down a slight 10% in its second episode, an unusually good hold from a hyped premiere--and then continued to build after that.  If Horror Story can follow the same trajectory, FX will be happily horrified.

THE SKED: Cable Ratings September 6-12

Jersey Shore's reign at the top of the weekly cable chart is over.  The NFL double-header on ESPN's Monday Night Football saw to that.  The early game started at 7:00 ET and scored a 6.3 demo rating, down from last year's ESPN opener but still potent.  The later game, featuring a late start time for the vast majority of the country (remember about 78% of the US population lives in the Eastern or Central time zone), included teams with less national appeal.

MTV's Jersey Shore and HBO's True Blood (season finale) followed the NFL football games in the ranking, and the heavily marketed Sons of Anarchy season premiere (FX) rounds out the Top 5 cable programs.  The rest of the chart is the usual hodgepodge of shows Middle America seems to like.  (No more speeches from me on that -- at least for a while.)

Honorable mention goes to HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm's season finale, which hit a 1.0 rating.  It's not quite enough to make our chart and not in the same league as its lead-in Entourage or True Blood, but it is a good number for a very funny -- if sometimes erratic -- series.  Also, AMC's Breaking Bad hit a 0.9 demo rating as it builds toward its season finale.  I'm sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but Breaking Bad features great storytelling and exceptional acting.  Perhaps it will fight its way onto the chart as the DEA, the Mexican Cartel, and his own conscience close in on Walter White.
