[2011.11.01] YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE CRUSHES I LOVE HONG KONG

courtesy of takungpao.com

The Giddens Ko directed film YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE since its Hong Kong release has been doing gangbusters business at the box office.  As of October 30, after 11 days in release it made HK$28,427,142 and successfully defeated the Lunar New Year film I LOVE HONG KONG (NGOR OI HK HOI SUM MAN SHUI) to become the highest grossing 2D Chinese language film so far this year.  The film also heads toward 3D SEX AND ZEN: EXTREME ECSTASY (3D YUK PO TUEN ji GIK LOK BO GAM)'s over 40 million box office figure.

Yesterday Giddens Ko attended an autograph session for the film's original soundtrack.  He thanked everyone for their support.  When asked why leads Ko Chen-Tung and Michelle Chen did not come to Hong Kong to promote?  He pointed out that Ko Chen-Tung had to go to school and Michelle Chen was working on an ad campaign.  Whoever had time came to Hong Kong.  He admitted that at first he never imagined that the film would have such a great response, the performance made him feel flattered and stunned both leads.

As for the film original soundtrack, it also sold over 10,000 copies already.  He took part in the creation of two songs and thus he would have royalty.  Giddens Ko said, "Making this movie changed me.  At first when I wrote this book I stank.  This film production was the collaboration of many people.  I am very touched to have such a good performance.  Thank you Shen Chia-Yi."  He pointed out that Shen Chia-Yi's family and friends have already seen the film, but she and her husband live in the Mainland so they have not seen it yet.  He has contacted her and hoped to know what she felt about the movie after seeing it.  He also
told her after the film release she might be the target of reporters; but Shen Chia-Yi trusted Giddens Ko would protect her and would not blame him.

The Sked: Ratings Advisory for Monday Fast Nationals

It's ABC's turn to have their fast national ratings for Monday programming inflated by Monday Night Football.  KMBC in Kansas City is carrying the Chargers-Chiefs game in prime time instead of the ABC line-up.  So assume Scared Shrekless, Dancing with the Stars and Castle will go down a tenth of a point in the official nationals from the fast nationals in the morning.

CBS will be impacted slightly (just in the 8-9 pm hour).  KFMB in San Diego will carry the game from approximately 5:30-9:00 pm PT and then carry the CBS lineup from 9-11 pm.  Look for How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls to be overstated by a tenth of a point or so in the fast nationals.

Kansas City is market #31, with 0.82% of TV households.  San Diego is market #28, with 0.94% of homes.

THE SKED: Sunday Ratings - Network Scorecard

The fairy tale continues for one of this season's new arrivals.

ABC:  The back order for ONCE UPON A TIME should be arriving any minute.  The fantasy soap has clearly found an audience sweet spot, and even with what will probably be the season's strongest Simpsons as competition (not to mention NBC's football and a CBS schedule boosted by the late afternoon game), it held beautifully in its second week.  In an ideal parallel universe for the network, the show would lift DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and PAN AM by more than 0.1 each, but ABC will take its happy ending as it comes.

FOX:  The SIMPSONS Treehouse of Horror episode outrated last year's installment (4.0 to 3.7), but that didn't do anything for the debut of ALLEN GREGORY, which won't be long for the schedule with numbers like last night's 2.4.  (Probably not coincidentally, FOX chose today to announce a back 9 order for Season 2 of Bob's Burgers; clearly the network knew it would have some space to fill on Sundays.)

CBS:  Football and a promotable 60 MINUTES helped the early part of the evening, but GOOD WIFE and CSI MIAMI aren't budging from the 2 neighborhood this season, and it remains to be seen whether the network will find that acceptable in the long term.

NBC:  Not a good game, as it turned out, but the presence of 2 marquee teams did wonders for the network's football rating compared to the past couple of weeks.

Tonight brings some depressed ratings due to Halloween, and the arrival of the NBC news series ROCK CENTER, not to be confused with the NBC comedy series 30 Rock.  No, really--don't confuse them.

The Sked: SUNDAY RATINGS October 30 & Sweep Update

A very good night for network television last night as three of four broadcast networks were up substantially over this night last year.  NBC averaged a 6.7 Adult 18-49 rating in the fast nationals Sunday night, and we are giving that a preliminary official national adjustment up to a 7.5 rating (well over the 6.0 official national rating for last year).  CBS had the NFL late afternoon game over-run and took full advantage of it with the 60 Minutes interview of Bernie Madoff's wife and son.  CBS averaged a 3.7 rating for the night (up from a 2.4 last year).  With Once Upon a Time working well, ABC averaged a 2.5 for the night (up from 2.2 last year).  FOX was the only down network, averaging a 2.7 last night (compared to a 5.3 last year with the late afternoon NFL game and the World Series).  Updated sweep standings follow.  Note that NBC is in second place four nights in, but the best time to judge relative placement of the networks is 7 nights and 14 nights into the sweep period.

           NOVEMBER SWEEP SCORECARD
          2011 vs 2010 Through Day 4 of 28

                 2011    2010
          FOX     4.9     3.8     +30%
          CBS     2.3     2.2     + 6%
          ABC     2.2     2.3     - 4%
          NBC     3.1     2.7     +13%

ABC had a very good rating from week two of Once Upon a Time (3.9 fast national rating, compared to a 4.0 premiere last week). Desperate Housewives (3.1) and Pan Am (1.9) were each up a tenth of a rating point from last week.

CBS enjoyed a 9.1 rating from 7:00-7:30 (New England at Pittsburgh), and 60 Minutes (airing 30 minutes late) averaged a 4.2 rating.  The show was very well programmed with two segments featuring Bernie Madoff's estranged wife and son and a segment about a Boston University linebacker's battle with cancer.  Amazing Race did a solid 2.9, while Good Wife and CSI Miami drifted down to a 2.0 each.

NBC's football game (Dallas at Philadelphia) featured great markets and teams but a horribly lopsided game.  But the play on the field mattered less than the teams involved or the point spread that had to be covered: the game portion of NBC's night averaged an 8.2 in the fast nationals, which is certain to go up to a high-8 at the very least.  Last year's football game on this night averaged a 7.3 in the official nationals.

FOX's "Animation Domination" tagline really only applies to the 8:00 half hour last night.  The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" turned in a solid 4.0 rating, while Allen Gregory premiered immediately following at only a 2.4.  Family Guy bounced back to a 3.2 (good but not great for it), and Cleveland Show finished the night with a soft 2.3.

[2011.10.31] JUNO MAK FEELS BLESSED NOT TO BE IN RUMORS WITH STEPHY TANG

courtesy of takungpao.com

The 8th Hong Kong Asian Film Festival two nights ago held a marathon screening with five quality films for the audience to watch all in one breath.  Juno Mak Chun Lung two nights ago was the film festival ambassador and cheered on viewers.  Other attendees included Ava Yu Hiu and Rainbow.

Juno said that he rather enjoyed this type of screening marathon because only with such an audience would there be film.  His highest viewing record was seven videos at once.  He said, "At the time I was studying in Canada.  Because in elementary school I didn't have to study much I had time to watch like that."  Juno's new film LET'S GO (BO WAI JIN DUI ji CHOOK DUNG LA! PUNG YAU!) will be this film festival's closing
film.  He said that in the film his co-star was Stephy Tang Lai Yun.  The most special was the production went on without any rumor.  He felt blessed because any rumors would make him feel awkward.  The film used the Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing performed SPACE EMPEROR GOD SIGMA Chinese theme song.  The director originally wanted Juno to perform another version, but he did not because he thought Gor Gor performed too
outstandingly and no one would sing it better.

[2011.10.31] HUANG XIAOMING'S COSTUME LOOK SCARES OTHERS

courtesy of takungpao.com

The Peter Chan Ho Sun produced, Andrew Lau Wai Keung directed THE GUILLOTINES (HUET DIK JI) recently unveiled each actor in costume.  Huang Xiaoming in the film played a "wanderer".  This time Xiaoming had messy hair, with a white robe covering his body he looked like a Greek scripture with teary eyes.  Lau Wai Keung said, "He was dressed like a mad man and a crazed criminal, which hid the most gentle heart inside."

Speaking of his long hair, Xiaoming joked, "When I look at the mirror, isn't this Jesus?"  On the day of costume fitting, Xiaoming pointed at his face and face and made a guarantee to Lau Wai Keung, "As long as I don't shave in three days, it will be here and here."  The director gladly agreed for real facial hair support and gave up the fake beard that would affect facial performance.  Huang Xiaoming tried three different long beards, due to differences in legnth he joked they were Jesus, Marx and bin Laden's beards.  Finally the "Jesus beard" had raves from both Chan Ho Sun and Lau Wai Keung.  Xiaoming also lost eight pounds for the role.  During the period he only had yogurt and cucumber.  He joked that this time he did not need to display his chest but he guaranteed that he was so slim that he had "cleavage".

In order to play the character well, Xiaoming before the shoot thought to drink to release himself.  Yet Chan Ho Sun joked that he had to see how he was after drinking.  If he went mad after drinking a little then he would be in trouble.  However, finally Chan Ho Sun accepted Xiaoming's suggestion.  Xiaoming and Lau Wai Keung often drank together on the set.  After the transformation, Xiaoming was almost in quarantine as often before the shoot he secretly got into the character.  His rage filled eyes even scared the assistant director who showed him his marks.  On several occasions when Lau Wai Keung accepted the take, he was still standing alone in the original spot.

[2011.10.31] NEW FILM EXHAUSTS JANICE MAN

courtesy of takungpao.com

Janice Man Wing Shan yesterday attended a certain well known brand's event and revealed that she has liked this brand since childhood.  She was very happy that this time work was shopping.  However recently she officially began work on the film TURNING POINT EXTREME (LAUGHING GOR ji CHIM JUI FAN), which made her feel very tired.  On the first day she had to work on the heaviest scene.  JM said, "I had to try until I collapsed, which was really tiring.  However in the film I played a female cop.  For this film I watched the entire series.  I was very surprised that I was able to be a part of it."

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "Once Upon A Time"

A lot can happen between the creation of a TV pilot in the spring and production of episodes for the regular season:  a writing/producing team is hired, audience focus groups weigh in, networks and studios (which may have had their own turnover in the off-season) give plenty of notes, both helpful and otherwise, and critics begin to rear their ugly heads.  The results can include changes to tone, pace, casting and even story.  Here at THE SKED, we're going to look past the pilots and present reviews of the first regular episodes of this year's new series as well.

Previously... on ONCE UPON A TIME:  Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is a Boston bounty-hunter who's celebrating a solitary birthday when her doorbell rings and 10-year old Henry (Jared Gilmore) turns up, announcing that he's the child she gave up for adoption after his birth.  What's more, he has a crazy story for her about Storybrooke, the town where he lives as the adopted son of Regina, the Mayor (Lana Parrilla):  it seems that everyone there was originally a fairy-tale character, and the Mayor, who was the Evil Queen of that universe, cursed them all by bringing them to modern-day Maine with no memory of who they were.  So Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) is the kindly schoolteacher, Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) is the avaricious landlord, and so on.  Also?  Also Emma herself is the child of Snow White and Prince Charming, the baby who was the only one saved from the curse, and also the only one who can rescue the townspeople and bring them back to their real identities.  Emma doesn't really believe any of this, of course--although we in the audience know it's true, because we've been watching the fairy-tale universe in flashbacks--but she does care about Henry, and she doesn't trust Regina.  So she decides to stay in Storybrooke for a while, much to Henry's delight and Regina's scheming concern.

Episode 2:  The second episode, written by series creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz and directed by Greg Beeman, picks up right where the pilot left off.  It underscores what's ingenious and fun and also what's problematic about the show's unique concept.  The modern day Storybrooke storylines are coming together nicely, with clever revelations about who the local characters really are.  This week we met the Enchanted Mirror, who in modern-day Storybrooke is the local newspaper editor (Giancarlo Esposito, for some of us eternally AKA Gus Fring), and Jiminy Cricket is the local shrink (Rafael Sbarge).  There was also a nice vulnerable moment for Emma, who knows Snow White is supposed to be her fairy-tale mother, when she finds herself, against logic, drawn to Ginnifer Goodwin's sweet and seemingly youthful schoolteacher.  Plus Lana Parrilla is terrifically evil as Regina (ah, for an ABC crossover where Regina could meet Madeleine Stowe's Victoria from Revenge), and she and Morrison are fine adversaries.  There were also some tantalizing hints about Rumplestiltskin having obtained Henry for Regina in Phoenix, which presumably will lead us to one of the show's central mysteries: the identity of Henry's father.

But Once Upon A Time insists on its dual-universe structure, so we also got flashbacks to the Evil Queen's implementation of her curse on the fairy-tale kingdom.  This section of the show allows for some impressive sets and fine (especially for TV) CG, but it doesn't tell us much we didn't already know, and it stops the drama cold--we already know how that story ends.  The point of this week's fantasy sequences was to show just how ruthless the Queen is:  she had to murder her own father to make the spell work.  But since the entire series is based on the Queen/Regina's evil, that wasn't exactly an open question, and certainly not worth the running time it was allotted in the episode.

The Once Upon A Time premiere had superb ratings, so unless things collapse, it will have a back order soon enough and a full season to figure out the balance of its stories.  It's still a work in progress that needs to find a dramatically urgent purpose for its elaborate flashbacks.  But there's no question that it's got a compelling idea at its center, and plenty of talent attached.  A happy ending could still be in the offing.

Original VerdictIf Nothing Else Is On...

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "Boss"

A lot can happen between the creation of a TV pilot in the spring and production of episodes for the regular season:  a writing/producing team is hired, audience focus groups weigh in, networks and studios (which may have had their own turnover in the off-season) give plenty of notes, both helpful and otherwise, and critics begin to rear their ugly heads.  The results can include changes to tone, pace, casting and even story.  Here at THE SKED, we're going to look past the pilots and present reviews of the first regular episodes of this year's new series as well.

Previously... on BOSS: The Mayor of Chicago, Tom Kane (Kelsey Grammer) is a master manipulator with plenty of issues that need to be kept under control.  There are, of course, innumerable political controversies:  in the pilot, the Mayor's long-planned expansion of O'Hare Airport was placed in jeopardy when workers preparing to exhume bodies on the property discovered Native-American artwork under the graves, and Kane was also propelling young politician Alex Zajac (Jeff Hephner) into the gubernatorial campaign against his frenemy the sitting Governor (Francis Guinan).  But Kane also has to deal with his icy wife Meredith (Connie Nielsen), his estranged daughter Emma (Hannah Ware) and reporter Sam Miller (Troy Garity), who's determined to get some dirt on him--not to mention the fact, which he doesn't know yet, that his trusted aide Kitty (Kathleen Robertson) is having a torrid affair with the married Zajac.  Worst by far, though, is the news he's just gotten:  he suffers from a degenerative and incurable nerve disorder that will destroy his abilities and then kill him within 5 years.

Episode 2:  More of the same, written by series creator Farhad Safinia and directed by TV vet Jim McKay (who handles things somewhat less ostentatiously than pilot director Gus Van Sant).  The story picks up the confrontation between the Mayor and the legislature about the discoveries found beneath the airport cemetery and Kane's attempt to link it with garbage pick-ups in the city.  (Kane prevails, but as one of the politicians notes, just the fact that he had to work so hard and still came close to losing is a sign of weakness.)  Kane also launches another manipulation of the gubernatorial race, leaking a video of Zajac that he knows the Governor will seize upon and attack, but which Zajac can actually explain to his own advantage.  (Zajac's affair with Kitty continues as well.)

Meanwhile, we get more detail about the frosty relationship between Kane and Meredith, and confirmation that Emma, who works as a ghetto doctor and appears to be a nun or lay preacher, is an addict who, because of her addiction, was abandoned by her parents for political reasons.  Now Kane is reaching out to her, even as she's lapsing back into bad habits.  Kane, for his part, is taking a variety of his own medications to control his symptoms, which are nevertheless starting to show in public.

All this is interesting, but no more so than it was in the pilot, and there's little added to the mix.  The pace remains quite slow, and the show has yet to introduce any character who can serve as a real adversary to Kane.  There's also no confidante:  the concept of the show is that Kane is essentially alone in the world, which means we continue to get a lot of Kelsey Grammer staring intently past the camera.

Boss is a high quality show, but its debut was fairly dismal in the ratings, and nothing in the second episode suggests any hook likely to bring in new viewers.  The series, which has already been renewed by Starz for a second season, is going to need something beyond Grammer brooding and disintegrating physically and mentally if it's to find any kind of an audience.

ORIGINAL VERDICT:  Potential DVR Alert

PILOT + 1:   Still Good, But Not Essential

Book to FIlm Club October Book: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

October 2011 Book Selection: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

The Woman in Black is a supernatural thriller following a young lawyer who goes to small town which has a menacing spectre and what better time than October to read a spooky story! I really enjoyed this one for several reasons, and I will admit it was refreshing to breeze through a less-than-200-pager after some of the tombs we've tackled. It was also an interesting change of pace to try a supernatural tale as well as a historically set book that was written fairly recently (1983).

Things to ponder on the book:
  • Did you enjoy reading it?
  • Was it a challenge to get through?
  • Was it what you were expecting?
  • What did you know about the book before reading it?
  • Did you enjoy the settings & time period? Can you tell it was written recently?
  • Did you find it scary?
  • What did you connect to with the book?
  • How did you feel about the length of the book?
  • What did you take away from reading the book?
  • Who would you recommend the book to?
About the upcoming film adaptations:
  • How do you feel about the casting of the film?
  • What do you hope to be the focus of the film?
  • What do you think is essential to keep from the book in the film?
  • What do you think they will add anything new to the film?
  • What do you think the challenges of the adaptation may be?
  • Do you have any hesitations on the adaptation?
  • If you've seen other film/TV/play adaptations, how do you think this one will be different?
  • What are you most looking forward to about the film adaptation?
If this was a re-read:
  • How did reading it this time compare with your previous time reading it?
  • Did you notice anything different this time round?
  • Did your interest and focus stay on the same characters and moments, or shift?
If you choose to shelf this out one:
  • Was there a barrier (genre, focus, time period, density)?
  • Would you consider trying it later?
  • Have you already read it?
  • Will you join us again in November for our last book of the year: Brighton Rock by Graham Greene? I hope you do!
Book reviews from Book to Film Clubbers:
Be the first!

Film Adaptation:
The Woman in Black stars Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter series), Ciarán Hinds (The Eclipse) and Janet McTeer, directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake). The film has been building a lot of energy in the past few months with the trailer released and stills as well. The scary and atmospheric feel definitely fits what I am hoping to see and I can't wait to see Daniel Radcliffe's take on the role of Arthur Kipps. I'm also thrilled to see we are going to see the film as including it in the Book to Film Club was a gamble with no release date at the time but now we know it will hit theatres on February 3, 2012.

Book to Film Club October Film: The Three Musketeers

Photobucket

Our October 2011 film selection for the Book to Film Club was The Three Musketeers, and we read the book by Alexandre Dumas back in August 2011. Well, I'm not sure how many of us braved it and I know I decided to go a speedy route myself. The good news is, the film looks to be quite a loose adaptation and goes with the whole fun-adventurous spirit.

I've been attending the Toronto After Dark Film Festival since it's release on October 21, 2011 so I haven't yet had a chance to see it, but it's the next film on my to see list. I adore the cast and can't wait to see what they come up with. The film will stars Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief), Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson (King Arthur, Kill the Irishman), Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe, Immortals), Milla Jovovich (Fifth Element, Resident Evil), Juno Temple (Kaboom), Mads Mikkelsen (After the Wedding / Efter brylluppet, Valhalla Rising), Christoph Watlz (Water for Elephants) and Orlando Bloom, directed by Paul W.S.

Anderson (Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Death Race (2008), AVP: Alien vs Predator).

THE BIJOU: Weekend Boxoffice Footnotes & Early International Numbers

DreamWorks Animation can blame the weather for diminishing its PUSS IN BOOTS number--although there seemed to be little effect on the weekend's other openings--but $34M is awfully low for a major animated release.  (And no one will be surprised to see the actual figure fall tomorrow by $400K or more, which is the margin by which it's claiming a Halloween weekend record.)  With only 2 more weeks until Happy Feet 2 arrives to take over the market, there's even the possibility that it won't get over $100M in the US. It's off to a good start overseas, though, with $17M in only 3 territories, mostly from Russia, enough to tie PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3's take from 48 territories.

Overseas, in fact, was where all the action was this weekend.  The most impressive boxoffice number this week was  Steven Spielberg's ADVENTURES OF TINTIN, which won't open in the US for almost 2 more months.  It had a splendid launch in 19 territories with $55M. (Those are major territories, so the estimate is that they come to over 50% of the film's international potential.)

Meanwhile, IN TIME was also more of a success story overseas ($14M from 35 territories) than in the US, where it only managed $12M.   THE RUM DIARY doesn't seem to have opened overseas yet, although it would take quite a bit to offset its dismal US performance.

Back in the US, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3's weekend hold was unexceptional, but its opening was so huge that it's still running well ahead of the second chapter in the series.  MONEYBALL, THE IDES OF MARCH and DOLPHIN TALE all lost large chunks of their theatres, accounting for their largest weekend declines to date, while REAL STEEL was battered by the arrival of Puss In Boots into the family market. (Real Steel has gone over $100M overseas, only a moderate number these days.)

The notable limited opening was LIKE CRAZY, which ended up with $30K in each of 4 theatres (half of those theatres were in Manhattan, so the weather may have had an appreciable effect).  With a $3700 average at its 265 theatres, ANONYMOUS showed little promise for a wider release.  MARGIN CALL did well with its first round of expansion ($4500 in each of 140, plus VOD), and on a smaller scale, so did THE SKIN I LIVE IN and MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE ($5500 and $7K in 32 each).  TAKE SHELTER reached 91 theatres, with a so-so $2100 average.

[2011.10.30] KARENA NG SET HER EYES WU CHUN FOR AN OLDER BROTHER

With Raymond Wong Pak Ming's full support, new comer Karena Ng Chin Yu yesterday along with fellow new Happy Girls Anjaylia Chan Ka Bo, Kelena Poon Kit Ning, Renee Lee Man Ying and Katie Kwok Sin Hung promoted their new film MAGIC TO WIN (HOI SUM MOR FAT).  Chin Yu praised co-star Wu Chun as a suitable boyfriend type.  "On my actual birthday I was promoting in Beijing with Wu Chun.  He was very friendly and very happy, which many girls like.  However I treat him like an older brother, any development is impossible."  She revealed that in the film she had many action scenes.  During a car crash scene she was injured but luckily she only bruised her arms and legs.  Chan Ka Bo praised Chin Yu who was in her first film as hard working and smart, and that the girls at work were filled with joy.

[2011.10.30] MICHAEL TSE'S CONFIDENCE RISES FROM PLAYING LAUGHING ANNUALLY

The Michael Tse Tin Wa, Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, Bosco Wong Chung Chak starred television series LIVES OF OMISSION (CHIM HUNG JUI GIK) had both good word of mouth and rating.  The production team decided to make a film version TURNING POINT EXTREME (LAUGHING GOR ji CHIM JUI FAN).  The story would be about Laughing Gor in prison and add new actors like Francis Ng Chun Yu, Chapman To Man Jat, Wai Ying Hung and Janice Man Wing Shan.  Hopefully it will be a box office hit like TURNING POINT (LAUGHING GOR ji Bin Jit) two years ago.

Tse Tin Wa who had to play the character Laughing every year was the favorite to win this year's television Best Actor.  He admitted that his confidence rose.  He said, "This year's performance indeed has been better than previous years, my confidence has been risen as well.  Finally I have a respectable report card to show everyone, but I don't know how to calculate my chances.  As long as the response to the character and the series is great then it's fine."  Tin Wa said that the film story will begin when the television series ended.  Laughing after going to prison met Ng Chun Yu, To Man Jat and others.  He said, "Ultimately the story is complicated.  Chun Yu will play a highly intelligent criminal, I will have many scenes with him."  As for co-star Fala Chen not taking part, Tin Wa admitted it was regrettable.  He said, "Fala's character has already ended, Madame Jo is a character who everyone likes.  Unfortunately she has no way to develop with the story."

Because the Fala Chen played Madame Jo has already passed, the film daringly cast the current Miss Hong Kong Rebecca Zhu who has no acting experience at all.  She admitted that she had to shoulder a lot of pressure and would give her all while hoping to learn from the elders.  Was she afraid that bad takes would affect the progress?  She said, "I would try to rehearse more and hope everyone would understand.  I too
want my first performance to be good."  Rebecca Zhu said that when she received the notice that she would participate in the film, she was particularly excited and pleased.  Would she have any intimate scene with Chun Yu or Tse Tin Wa?  She said that would depend on the script and asked everyone to keep their eyes peeled.  Ng Chun Yu said that he got a raise.  He joked, "Doesn't everyone see the five dollar coin that we are holding?  We really got a raise, Ms. Lok (Elaine Lok Yi Ling) is very generous.  The increase percentage is very high."  After two years ago leading new comer Fala Chen in TURNING POINT, this year Chun Yu also will lead Rebecca Zhu.  Was leading new comers more difficult for him on the set?  He said, "Passing it on from generation to generation, I help when I can.  Everyone has been a new comer one time or another, when I am free I would chat with her more."

[2011.10.30] CHRISSIE CHAU STILL COMMUNICATES WITH HER BOYFRIEND

Chrissie Chau Sau Na and Jam Hsiao (Siu King Tung) yesterday promoted their new film THE KILLER WHO NEVER KILLS.  They played games with viewers to welcome Halloween and pretended to be killers.  Chau Sau Na said that she would ask her boyfriend Avis to support her new film.  As for the earlier romantic trouble rumors, Chau Sau Na said that she would not refuse to converse with her boyfriend.  She said, "If we
don't speak it would be very tough, I haven't turned mute yet."  Chau Sau Na said that she has not seen her boyfriend in a few days.  Both were busy with work.  Avis' mother recently went to the hospital for eye surgery.  Chau Sau Na said that she did not have time to visit yet.  She said, "I wish her an early recovery, I have had similar minor surgery before."  Chau Sau Na was familiar with Avis' mother.  As for whether she
would like to drink the daughter in law tea, Chau Sau Na said, "We should respect elders, but she rarely asks about that.  She would be concern with our health.  She hasn't urged us to marry but has asked us to buy a home.  We can't rush that and Aunt is an understanding person."  Chau Sau Na said that with the recent property price decline, she was considering ownership.

Siu King Tung received many fan support.  He thanked Hong Kong fans for their passionate support.  This time his new film faced the blockbuster YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE.  Despite the strong competition, Siu King Tung said that he did not have too much pressure.  He said, "No need to compare, I just have to be very relaxed and watch in a simple mood then it's fine."  Siu King Tung hoped to have a chance to work with his idol Jacky Cheung Hok Yau in movies and music.  At the same time he believed that his wish would come true.

[2011.10.30] KAY TSE AND HER SON FACE EACH OTHER WITH TEARS

courtesy of on.cc
courtesy of takungpao.com

Just returning from a film production in the Mainland, Kay Tse On Kay was busy promoting her new record.  Two nights ago at her new record autograph session she discussed going to Beijing and Dunhuang for her new film THE LEGEND OF DUNHUANG, which was also the longest that she has been away from her son.

Tse On Kay said, "This production took three months, although I have come back to Hong Kong during that time I was away from my son for three weeks.  It was the longest in history.  Thus after the production ended and I saw my son the next day after returning to Hong Kong, he looked like he was about to cry with grievances.  I couldn't help but be teary eyed.  When I was shooting on location in Dunhuang, my husband came to visit the set.  The location was really very pretty.  Hopefully in the future we can visit there again as a family."

2011 Scream Award Winners

Catching up on a few things this weekend including the winners for the 2011 The Scream Awards which were presented on Tuesday October 18, 2011. Thrilled to see that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 picked up many awards in it's senior year and although I didn't love Black Swan I am excited to see a female protagonist film get a lot of love. I'm a little sad that Transformers: Dark of the Moon won for Best 3-D Movie over films like TRON: Legacy, but I'm sure the bias of recency has something to do with it. One of the strongest categories this year was easily Best Independent Movie - and from the nominees of Another Earth, Hatchet II, I Saw the Devil, Monsters and Rubber the winner was Monsters.

Sounds like the broadcast of the awards was fun to watch. Maybe I'll catch it in 2012. Until there, here are the 2011 winners of the Scream Awards:
