FOX's 4-sitcom Tuesday excited no one.

FOX:  I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER and BREAKING IN made unimpressive returns to the schedule.  Daughter could claim a decent retention of its RAISING HOPE lead-in, and it also won the head-to-head sitcom battle at 8:30PM--but really there's nothing good about a 1.6 premiere.  Breaking In had less excuse, falling to an ugly 1.7 from NEW GIRL's strong 3.0 lead-in, which was the highest number on any network last night. And even though Raising Hope handled its shift to 8PM well, it aired against an ABC repeat last night, so future results may not be as strong.


ABC: The network actually aired some good programming last night, to little avail.  COUGAR TOWN had a funny half-hour directed by Courtney Cox, and for Bill Lawrence fans, it had the additional pleasure of a guest appearance by Scrubs' Sarah Chalke.  After that, THE RIVER finally delved into what's supposed to be the show's central mystery--just what happened to Dr. Emmett Cole--which allowed Bruce Greenwood to appear in more than snippets, in a creepy hour directed by Michelle McLaren.  For their troubles, the show got matching lousy 1.5 ratings, 4th place for their slots.  (Cougar Town at least had the excuse that it rose from its repeat LAST MAN STANDING lead-in, but as its cast members continue to flock to 2d position pilot deals, that doesn't matter much.)  The evening ended with a terrible 0.9 for a BODY OF PROOF repeat that was beaten by primary election coverage on NBC.

NBC:  THE BIGGEST LOSER fell to a season and possibly a series low, dipping below a 2 for the first time.  At 10PM, a DECISION 2012 special scored a not-embarrassing-for-a-news-special 1.0.

CBS:  All repeats, which were still enough to win all but the 9-9:30PM half-hour of the night.

CW:  90210 returned after a month off with a fine (CW level) 0.7, but RINGER dipped to a 0.5 after that.

Tonight's only new arrival is REVENGE FOR REAL, which ABC will use to sucker in Revenge fans rather than air repeats.  The network is giving it a bit of a lead-in with a new HAPPY ENDINGS (although that show's rating will be lowered by having a repeat MODERN FAMILY as its own lead-in).  NBC airs new sitcoms at 8-9PM, and apart from that, only the unscripted shows on all the networks are original.

The Sked: TUESDAY RATINGS March 6

Super Tuesday was anything but for the broadcast networks last night.  Each broadcast network was down significantly from the same night last year (worst hit was FOX at 8 pm -- a 5.9 rating for a Glee original episode was replaced by two original comedy episodes that rated a 2.1 and 1.6).  Worse, the Super Tuesday election disrupted network schedules (local coverage in some markets pre-empted all or part of programs, while network coverage was inserted into entertainment programs with the time coming directly out of on-air promotion time).  So fewer people were watching and it was even more difficult to reach those viewers than normal with promos for the rest of the week.  This is yet another night of season lows and sizable declines from last season, a trend that has really picked up since the first of the year.  Come back later today when we will look at the prime time season so far, highlighting the accelerating yearly declines.

With Glee taking a break, FOX shifted to a four-comedy Tuesday, moving Raising Hope to 8:00, returning I Hate My Teenager Daughter to 8:30, and bringing Breaking In back in the 9:30 time period.  No one really noticed.  New Girl continues to struggle at its season low (3.0), although it is now FOX's highest-rated show of the night.  The rest of the comedies struggled at 2 rating or below.  Last year on this night, FOX aired Glee (5.9) followed by Raising Hope (3.2) and Traffic Light (1.8).

CBS moved into repeat mode and had a Tuesday fairly similar to its last repeat burst in January.  Last year CBS averaged a 2.1 on the comparable night of repeats:  NCIS (2.4), NCIS Los Angeles (2.7) and Good Wife (1.3).

ABC aired a half repeat (Last Man Standing and Body of Proof) and half original schedule (Cougar Town and The River), but the entire night looked like a see of repeats given the ratings.  Last year on this night: No Ordinary Family (1.1), V (2.3) and Detroit 187 (1.5).

Biggest Loser tied a season low, while an NBC News Decision 2012 special (1.0) replaced a Parenthood repeat and actually slightly improved what the family drama would have done.  Last year on this night: Biggest Loser (3.3) from 8-10 pm and a Parenthood repeat (1.2).

THE SKED SEASON PREMIERE REVIEW: "Breaking In"

WHERE WE WERE:  Contra Security, a wacky high-tech firm run by the extravagantly enigmatic Oz (Christian Slater).  Contra tests the security measures of its clients by cracking them wide open, staging mock break-ins, robberies, and similar hijinks.  Its roster of idiosyncratic experts include hacker Cameron (Bret Harrison), gadget guy Cash (Alphonso McAuley) and, for the moment at least, lock-picker Melanie (Odette Annable).

WHERE WE ARE:  A somewhat different version of Contra.  BREAKING IN's behind-the-scenes story was at least as interesting as anything that happened on the show.  It aired initially with the giant lead-in of American Idol, and scored not-bad ratings in the mid-2s.  When FOX moved the show away from Idol at the end of the season and gave it Raising Hope as a lead-in, the number plummeted to 1.3.  So one's feeling about the ratings of the show sort of depended on how much one was squinting when looking at them.  In the (sort of) end, FOX didn't renew the series when its network option was up in May.  But Sony Television, which produces Breaking In, didn't give up, and when the cast options were expiring at the end of June (it's typical for cast options to extend beyond the network's, in case the studio can place the show somewhere else with a little extra time), it had talked FOX into splitting the cost of extending the deals for a few more months, so FOX could have a chance to reconsider.  Which, in the (real) end, it did, renewing the show for a midseason run that began tonight--and giving it the hit New Girl as a lead-in.


It's safe to assume that part of the pitch Sony made to the network was a shift in the creative elements of the show, and so the cast of Breaking In 2.0 isn't exactly the same as last year's.  The disguises expert who was part of the team is gone, as is Melanie's buffoonish fiance. And Melanie herself, for that matter, will only recur in some of the remaining episodes (Annable had meanwhile taken a role on FOX's House).  The bigger news is that Contra would have new ownership, with Oz selling the company to a conglomerate personified by the new character of Veronica (Emmy Award-winner Megan Mullally, who's been added to the cast), and her assistant Molly (Erin Richards).  

The season premiere, written and directed respectively by series co-creators Adam F. Goldberg and Seth Gordon, was mostly concerned with setting up the new premise of the show.  Since every single FOX promo had made it clear that Veronica was the new boss, the first half of the episode was unintentionally tiresome as it introduced her as the new perky and annoying assistant to Oz she was pretending to be.  Once the reveal finally took place, the focus was on the Contra employees, so there was still no clear picture of who Veronica is actually going to be.  (Presumably the producers and network are fully aware that having both Mullally and Slater sharing a screen squeezes an awful lot of hamminess into a very small space.)  The Molly character was only briefly introduced, so other than being British and (naturally) acerbic, her role isn't defined yet either.

The basic dynamic of last year's Breaking In was that every week, Cameron and the others would leap to conclusions about what their assignment was and what Oz was really plotting, and every time, it would turn out that Oz was fiendishly playing mind-games with them and was actually 3 steps ahead.  Presumably with Mullally around, that's going to be somewhat different.  The other major thread was Cam's not-quite requited longing for Melanie, and with Annable playiing a limited role, that's not going to be the same this season either.  So the show is going to have some fundamental changes to its DNA.

As for tonight's episode itself, it was at best mildly funny:  Cash's pranks are rarely as clever as the writers seem to think, there was little opportunity for the pop culture jokes that usually abound (apart from an extremely forced Breakfast Club bit), and the script had to do a lot of heavy lifting to contrive both Mullally's arrival and Slater's continuing presence.  Breaking In was far from memorable TV before--we'll find out in the next few weeks if the changes have made it any less disposable.

THE SKED @ PALEYFEST 2012: "New Girl"

There's something infectious about watching the people behind a brand-new TV hit enjoy their success, and at tonight's PaleyFest salute to this year's break-out comedy hit NEW GIRL, the pleasure of the cast and producers bubbled over.  

To an unusual extent that the panelists acknowledged themselves, the dynamics among the cast members and writers seemed not unrelated to the relationships in the show.  By the time creator/showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether had finished kicking off the session and introducing the episode being screened, it came as no surprise later on when star Zooey Deschanel summarized her character Jess by saying she was equal parts the 13-year old versions of herself and Meriwether.  Similarly, the good-natured snarky bickering between Jake M. Johnson (Nick), Max Greenfield (Schmidt) and Lamorne Morris (Winston) could have been outtakes from any given episode, and there seemed to be a gray area between where the actress Hannah Simone left off and her character Cece picked up.



Everyone concerned spoke several times of the show's efforts to deepen and develop the characters as the show goes on, and it turned out that the screened episode "Injured" (which airs tomorrow night) was a standout example of this principle in action.  "Injured" may be the first episode of New Girl that takes place entirely outside of the apartment all the characters except Cece share, and it centers on Nick rather than Jess.  In the course of the episode, Nick has a health scare, and the tone of the episode resembles the bittersweet 50/50 more than New Girl's usual carefree celebration of character eccentricities.  More interestingly, the episode has a very loose, casual feel akin to an F/X comedy.  Not incidentally, "Injured" was directed by Lynn Shelton, whose reputation is in semi-improvised indie relationship comedy-dramas like Humpday and the excellent upcoming Your Sister's Sister--whether "Injured" was actually partly improvised or just very well scripted (by J.J. Philbin), it shows New Girl starting to put some distance between itself and its cutely charming roots.  

There were little in the way of spoiler revelations in the course of the evening--as producer Jake Kasdan noted, the series has few enough continuing storylines, they didn't want to ruin any of them--except that Dermot Mulroney and Jeanne Tripplehorn will appear in an arc (Mulroney as a Jess love interest), and that shippers hoping for the seemingly inevitable Jess/Nick coupling will have to wait for a while.  

With Glee fading, New Girl is now at the center of FOX's Tuesday night, with an audience slightly smaller than CBS' 2 Broke Girls but with far more pop cultural and critical cachet.  The show has plenty of time--years, undoubtedly--to work out how and where they want the series to go.

Did PARENTHOOD buy itself another season?

NBC:  Creatively, PARENTHOOD's season finale wasn't the show at its best (too many storyline conclusions crammed into too little time).  But its 1.9 rating built on last week's increase, and "tied for 1st place" isn't a phrase NBC gets to hear very often these days in reference to any timeslot.  The show at least gave itself a fighting chance.  Parenthood's number was particularly impressive because it was just 0.1 below its BIGGEST LOSER lead-in, which was close to a season low thanks to the atypical competition on FOX.


FOX:  The night's AMERICAN IDOL number could be viewed as half-empty or half-full.  On the one hand, as Mitch Metcalf noted, the rating was down a horrific 41% from last year's parallel episode.  But in the context of this season, it was more or less even with what seems to be Idol's new ratings level.  (In any case, the bragging rights to the season's biggest non-football show are now THE VOICE's to lose.)

ABC:  Some may have noticed yesterday that Josh Hopkins, one of the leads in COUGAR TOWN, has signed to a pilot in "second position," which for the uninitiated means he's committed to the new show unless his current one is renewed.  No one likes to recast a new show that's managed to get ordered, so these deals are typically made only when an actor's current series is circling the drain.  Mistakes are made (Damon Wayans Jr made a 2d position deal last year for New Girl and then Happy Endings was renewed), but Cougar Town did itself no favors with last night's season-low 1.5.  Also heading upstream without a paddle:  THE RIVER, with a matching 1.5.  Both of those look good, though, next to BODY OF PROOF and its disastrous 1.3.(and Body didn't have the excuse of facing Idol).

CBS:  NCIS, while still a strong 2d in its hour, hit a season low that completed a startlingly bad February stretch (by its standards), with a track of 4.2/3.9/3.6/3.4.  NCIS LA has been more up and down during the month, and last night was up to a very decent 3.1.  UNFORGETTABLE tied for the hour's lead, but those words are less magic at CBS than they are at NBC, and the show hit a season low with a symbolically painful 1.9, slipping below a 2 for the first time.

CW:  Only the network knows why it's been giving RINGER a repeat HART OF DIXIE lead-in for the past 2 weeks.  Last night Dixie's 0.3 led Ringer to a series low 0.4.

Tonight, the final night of February sweeps, features new episodes schedule-wide (but get ready for a whole lot of repeats in March).  CW premieres the latest cycle of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, this time with Americans vs. Brits.

American Idol came to Tuesday night for a special episode.  Although it won the night, the episode was down 41% from the comparable edition last year and had a relatively limited effect on the other networks, whose ratings were not terribly different from last week.

As it did on this night last year, FOX pre-empted its Tuesday schedule for a special American Idol.  This year's 5.0 rating for a two-hour episode (featuring the 12 male finalists performing) is down a whopping 41% from the 8.5 rating for the 90-minute episode on this night last year. Comedy returns to FOX Tuesday next week.  Last year on this night, FOX aired American Idol (8.5) from 8:00-9:30 followed by Raising Hope (3.9).

CBS was even with last week -- a weekly decline in NCIS (down two tenths of a rating point to a season low) was balanced by a four-tenths increase for NCIS: Los Angeles.  Unforgettable continues to drift downward, on track for yet another season low.  Last year CBS averaged a 3.9 on the comparable night:  NCIS (4.8), NCIS Los Angeles (4.0) and Good Wife (2.9).

ABC Tuesday continues to erode, with each program in the line-up down versus last week (most were down two tenths of a rating point) and most programs setting season lows.  The River and Body of Proof are at levels that make a renewal for next season virtually impossible.  Last year on this night ABC was significantly stronger after 9 pm: No Ordinary Family (1.6), V (2.4) and 20/20 (3.5).

Facing Idol on FOX, Biggest Loser fell back down to a 2.0 (possibly going up to a 2.1 in the official nationals but still quite low).  Parenthood finished its season with a 1.9 rating, up from recent lows and tied with Unforgettable for a weak first place among the broadcast networks.  Last year on this night: Biggest Loser (2.8) from 8-10 pm and a Parenthood original (2.7).

GLEE looks at a shark and considers taking a jump.

FOX:  Despite perhaps the most melodramatic midseason finale of any "comedy' in TV history (a suicide attempt, an as-yet unexplained pregnancy, and a dead-or-not-dead? cliffhanger), GLEE was up only 0.1 from last week's season low.  The show won't air again until mid-April.  NEW GIRL was down to a new series low, and RAISING HOPE, while marginally up, was only 0.2 above its own season low.  After next week's 2-hour special Tuesday Idol, both sitcoms will be part of FOX's 4-sitcom Tuesday through March, with Hope moving to earlier in the evening.


NBC:  What's the deal with NBC's Promo department spoiling every upcoming plot point on PARENTHOOD in its "Next Week On..." spots?  Both of last night's major developments been disclosed a week ago, and the promo for next week's season finale wasn't much better.  A sign of desperation (last night continued a month of the show hovering at or just above its series low), or that the network just doesn't care?  Meanwhile, THE BIGGEST LOSER continued its steady if unspectacular pace, with all ratings in the past 6 weeks within a narrow 0.2 range.

ABC:  The good news for COUGAR TOWN was that it was down only 0.1 from last week's hyped premiere, but a 1.7 leaves little else to celebrate.  1.7 was also the steady number for THE RIVER, making no headway from 4th place at 9PM.  BODY OF PROOF was up 0.2 from last week's series low, still bring up the rear in its hour.

CBS:  The network edged out a 0.1 win for the night, but all its shows were down, with NCIS LA and UNFORGETTABLE hitting season lows.

CW:  Here's an oddity:  last night's repeat of HART OF DIXIE was only 0.2 below Monday's new episode (and just 0.1 below Monday's new GOSSIP GIRL).  That surprisingly decent lead-in helped RINGER to a still-mediocre 0.5.

Everything is new tonight, including a 2-hour Idol on FOX.  The only special event is a 20/20 standing in for Revenge on ABC, centering on this year's Oscar nominees back before they were famous.  (Jean DuJardin and Berenice Bejo, before they were household names?  How exciting!)

The Sked: TUESDAY RATINGS February 21

FOX, NBC and ABC each edged up one tenth of a rating point from last week's soft Valentine's Day levels, but CBS was down another two tenths from last week.  Emblematic of the weak network numbers across the week, two networks were well above a 3.0 rating on this night last year, while none could break a 3.0 last night.

CBS was down two tenths from last Tuesday but hung on to first place with a 2.9, one tenth ahead of FOX.  NCIS did a ho-hum (for it) 3.8 rating, down a tick from last week.  NCIS: Los Angeles wilted three tenths of a rating point to a 2.9, a new season low.  Unforgettable continues to sag, down four tenths from last week to a 1.9.  Sadly, it remains the highest rated network program Tuesday at 10 pm.  Last year CBS averaged a 3.4 on the comparable night:  NCIS (4.4), NCIS Los Angeles (3.9) and Good Wife (2.0).

FOX's Glee ticked up one tenth from last week's season low but remains under a 3.0.  New Girl built one tenth of a rating point from Glee to a 3.0 but that's down from last week and establishes a new season low (pending any adjustments in the official national ratings).  Last year on this night, FOX aired Glee (4.4) followed by Raising Hope (2.4) and Traffic Light (1.6).

ABC Tuesday featured flat week to week performances from Last Man Standing and The River at low levels, while the second week of Cougar Town edged down a tenth from a very weak premiere.  At 10 pm, Body of Proof was actually up two tenths from last week's season low (but only to a 1.4).  The 10 pm uptick enabled ABC's 8-11 pm average to rise one tenth over last week, but the network is still mired in fourth place on the night.  Last year on this night ABC was doing even worse: No Ordinary Family (1.4), V (1.9) and Primetime Special (1.4).

The Sked: TUESDAY RATINGS February 14

A pretty uneventful Valentine's night on the broadcast networks, with only NCIS above a 3.5 rating (3.9) and only NCIS: LA and New Girl between a 3.0 and 3.4 (3.2 each).  Also, Cougar Town returned to the air on ABC, and no one noticed.  Valentine's Day does suppress television viewing a bit (mostly with 18-34 year olds), but the real problem on Tuesday is that there are just not that many truly young-skewing shows to begin with on good nights.  Rebuilding Tuesday will be a major priority for most if not all broadcast networks this spring as they assemble their fall schedules for next season.

CBS won another Tuesday night yesterday with a 3.1 rating from 8-11 pm, down one tenth from last week.  NCIS settled back down about (down three tenths from last week's 200th episode), while NCIS: LA and Unforgettable were up one tenth from last week, still at relatively low levels for the season.  Last year on CBS was one tenth lower on the night:  NCIS (3.6), NCIS Los Angeles (3.3) and Good Wife (2.0).

FOX's Glee crashed below a 3.0 rating, a 2.8 rating in the fast nationals and maybe going up to a 2.9 in the official nationals (either way a new low).  Raising Hope was promoted more heavily than was New Girl this week.  The result: a new low for New Girl and the same low rating for Raising Hope.  The Raising promos pointed to the "heartwarming" nature of the episode, a curious tactic for a show that has been anything but since the pilot.  Last year on this night, FOX aired Glee (4.2) followed by Raising Hope (2.2) and Traffic Light (1.4).

ABC returned Cougar Town to the air last night and received ratings only slightly better than the final numbers for now-departed Work It and Man Up! (under a 2 rating).  Last Man Standing continues to struggle, barely above a 2 rating.  The bad news continues for Steven Spielberg and Oren Peli's The River, now well under a 2 rating and probably still headed for another decline next week.  Body of Proof, without any support at 9 pm, is now headed for just above a 1 rating for original episodes.  The ABC Tuesday lineup now matches the performance of the Island of Misfit Dramas last year on the same night: No Ordinary Family (1.5), V (1.9) and Detroit 187 (1.2).

THE SKED'S TUESDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Not all shows premiere like Smash.

ABC:  In recent years, viewers have flocked to horror series from True Blood to The Walking Dead to The Vampire Diaries, and at the multiplex, "found footage" thrillers like Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside and Chronicle sell tickets like crazy, so... So this is why the entertainment business drives businesspeople crazy, because comparatively speaking, no one showed up for THE RIVER, ABC's stab at the genre, which had a blah 2.4 opening, with a steadily decreasing track that bodes very badly for next week.  It's a short-term problem for the network, since only 7 episodes were ordered, but it's not going to make Tuesdays in the rest of February and March pleasant for ABC.  The 8PM LAST MAN STANDING was just 0.2 above its season low, and a special 8:30PM episode didn't do much better.


NBC:  Any hope for a halo effect after the best 2 days of the network's season went out the window, as THE BIGGEST LOSER was up only 0.1 from recent weeks, and then PARENTHOOD, facing a stronger competitor on ABC than the usual Body of Proof, slumped to a season low 1.6.  Parenthood's ratings in 2012 have been terrible, and with only a few more episodes left in its season order, its producers have to be glad they're on the one network where those numbers aren't necessarily a death sentence.

CBS:  The 200th episode of NCIS easily won its hour, but with The River perhaps siphoning off some male viewers, NCIS LA and UNFORGETTABLE were both only 0.1 above their season lows.

FOX:  GLEE was way down from last week's Michael Jackson episode (apparently Ricky Martin doesn't have quite the same name value).  NEW GIRL won its timeslot, but shows no signs of recapturing the highs of its fall ratings, and both it and RAISING HOPE were 0.2 above their season lows.

CW:  90210 held its own with a 0.7, but RINGER's 0.5 was down 0.1 from last week's midseason premiere.

Tonight the only news is on the news side:  CBS fills in at 8PM (pending the return of Survivor) with a special PERSON TO PERSON interview show hosted by Charlie Rose and Lara Logan (the title is from an Edward R. Murrow series that ran 1953-1961, a reference that should certainly pull in the young crowd).  At 9PM, ROCK CENTER moves to its new timeslot, where it can look forward to being decimated by a new MODERN FAMILY on ABC.  At 10PM, CSI will probably be down from Marg Helgenberger's exit episode, while REVENGE moves toward the endgame of the first arc of its season's storyline.

The SKed: TUESDAY RATINGS February 7

NCIS celebrates its 200th episode and guides CBS to a narrow victory over FOX, as Glee continues to fade.  The River opens quietly on ABC, while Parenthood on NBC set a season low.

CBS narrowly won the night with its regular schedule.  The night started strong with the 200th episode of NCIS, near a season high for the series.  But then NCIS: LA and Unforgettable fell back to near season lows (despite the addition of TV veteran Jane Curtin to the struggling 10 pm drama).  Last year on CBS was slightly higher:  NCIS (4.2), NCIS Los Angeles (3.5) and Good Wife (2.2).

FOX's Glee continues to flirt with season lows -- guest star Ricky Martin was not the answer last night.  Despite the lower lead in, the comedies New Girl and Raising Hope maintained recent levels.  Last year on this night, FOX aired Glee (4.6) followed by Raising Hope (2.7) and Traffic Light (1.9).

ABC answered your prayers (hey, they said so in their promos) and delivered two original episodes of Last Man Standing at 8:00 (2.3) and 8:30 (2.5), the latter guest starred Kim Kardashian.  Next, The River (with a pedigree that included Steven Spielberg and Oren Peli from Paranormal Activity) premiered with a just okay 2.4 from 9-11 pm.  However, the show declined each half hour: 2.5... 2.4... 2.3... 2.2.  Not a steep decline like we saw with Smash on NBC Monday, but not at all encouraging.  Still, the night is a vast improvement from the Island of Misfit Dramas that was ABC Tuesday last on the same night: No Ordinary Family (1.5), V (1.8) and Detroit 187 (1.3).

Well, the glow of this year's Super Bowl lasted 24 hours.  NBC moved back to fourth place with a soft performance from Biggest Loser and a season low from Parenthood.  Last year on this night: Biggest Loser (3.0) from 8-10 pm and Parenthood original (1.9).

THE SKED'S PILOT + 1 REVIEW: "The River"

A lot can happen between the creation of a TV pilot in the spring and production of episodes for the regular season:  a writing/producing team is hired, audience focus groups weigh in, networks and studios (which may have had their own turnover in the off-season) give plenty of notes, both helpful and otherwise, and critics begin to rear their ugly heads.  The results can include changes to tone, pace, casting and even story.  Here at THE SKED, we're going to look past the pilots and present reviews of the first regular episodes of this year's new series as well.

Previously... on THE RIVER:  A small boat called the Magus heads up the Amazon, in search of vanished TV nature series host Dr. Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood).  The crew is a mix of Cole's family and friends--wife Tess (Leslie Hope), son Lincoln (Joe Anderson) and Lena (Eloise Mumford), the daughter of his trusted cameraman--and a TV crew headed by Clark (Paul Blackthorne) that's documenting the search.  Also along are mercenary Brynildson (Thomas Kretschman) providing security, and the boat's engineer (Daniel Zacapa) and his adolescent daughter Jahel (Paula Gaitan).  There are plenty of tensions among this group as they follow breadcrumbs of clues they find in the videotapes Cole has left behind.  And along the way, at every stop they encounter all manner of supernatural phenomena.  The entire show is supposedly edited together from the footage shot by the documentary crew itself.



Episode 2:  Although The River aired as a "2-hour premiere," it was actually the original pilot with the first regular episode appended.  The building blocks of exposition and mythology having been established in the pilot, that second hour gives a good picture of what the series is planning to be.  Clearly it'll be quite a while before the Magus finds Emmet Cole, and some of the show's episodic adventures will only tangentially involve the search for him.

In the 2d hour episode, written by Executive Producers Michael Green and Zack Estrin, and directed by pilot director Jaune Collet-Serra, some kind of magic CG bug flew into Jahel's mouth and temporarily possessed her with Cole's spirit (and Bruce Greenwood's voice).  The spirit tried to talk the group into going home, but of course then there'd be no show, so they ignored him/it and pressed on.  Something the spirit said seemed to indicate that Cole was still alive but being held in captivity, which set the Magus to this week's part of the Amazon.  Cole wasn't there, but they did find the ghost of a dead colonial family's child.  The site where the girl drowned was surrounded by dolls who sometimes came alive, and since the dead girl missed her dead mother, in her loneliness she took Tess as a substitute.  (This storyline oddly echoed The Woman In Black, which opened in theatres last weekend.) 

The hour had a few creepy moments, but it never made the use that it should have of those dolls, which didn't do much more than open their eyes and stare (limited series CG budget?).  Watching Leslie Hope get pulled under muddy water was a good deal less frightening.  The episode also made clear some of the limitations of the show's concept.  Since the show-within-the-show is being filmed by a professional TV crew, the "found footage" gimmick doesn't mean much (unlike, say, the ingenious use of technical imitations in Paranormal Activity 3), because it all looks like any other TV show except for the shaky hand-held camerawork used to accentuate panic in the action sequences, and there's already overuse of genre cliches like images suddenly cutting to static or flaring in the face of the supernatural.  Also, the conventions of series television mean that the regular characters aren't in all that much mortal danger until we get near the season finale, which lessens any suspense, and thus far, the relationships between those characters are none too scintillating.

Since the hunt for Emmet Cole is a very loose underpinning for the series at this point (this week we got a B story suggesting that it's Lena, not Lincoln, who's the "chosen one" that will have to fight evil to rescue Cole), each episode of The River will mostly have to fend for itself, based on the strength of that week's story.  This episode was medium-scary, and the show will have to do better if the repeated scenes of people stumbling through jungle or looking off the side of the boat and exclaiming "What the hell was that?!?" aren't to get tiresome.

THE SKED: FOX Adjusts Its Tuesdays

FOX had announced last year that rather than air GLEE repeats in the space between its original February episodes and the new ones that will close out the season, it would instead air a 2-hour block of sit-coms.  That's still the plan, but today they shuffled just what those comedies will be and when they'll air.


Starting on March 6, Tuesdays will start with new episodes of RAISING HOPE (instead of New Girl reruns, as originally scheduled), facing off against Last Man Standing (as well as NCIS and Biggest Loser, which are less direct competition).  Then I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER, which had been scheduled to air after 90-minute American Idol episodes on Wednesdays, will instead take the 8:30PM slot and compete with Cougar Town.  NEW GIRL will of course keep its usual 9PM slot, and at 9:30PM BREAKING IN, the Christian Slater slow that was cancelled and then un-cancelled last Spring, will try to capitalize on its newly strong lead-in (it was originally supposed to have the 8:30PM slot).  

At first glance, this is clearly good news for Breaking In, which gets an original New Girl rather than a repeat as its lead-in.  It's bad news for Raising Hope, which loses its sheltered 9:30 slot and has to open the evening against Tim Allen.  Since Hope will be Teenage Daughter's lead-in rather than American Idol, it's also bad for Teenage, and seemingly unnecessary in terms of Tuesday results, since original Teenage episodes probably won't do a number much different than New Girl repeats would have.  The one piece of this puzzle that FOX hasn't yet announced is what will now be airing at 9:30PM on Wednesdays, and it'll be interesting to see if Idol is extended for 2 hours on that night--if so, it may suggest that FOX needed this change to create some extra Idol advertising inventory, in order to make up for the shortfall in this season's ratings and revenues.

THE SKED'S TUESDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Some things are eternal, and Michael Jackson appears to be one of them.

FOX:  GLEE's Michael Jackson episode propelled the show to a 3.6, its best rating in months.  The strong lead-in didn't help the network's sit-coms much, though:  NEW GIRL was only up 0.1 for the night, and RAISING HOPE fell to match its season low.


CW:  RINGER, returning from a hiatus that seemed almost as long as Mad Men's, didn't find absence making audience hearts grow much fonder, with the same 0.6 it had on November 29, which was down slightly from its 90210 lead-in.

NBC:  BIGGEST LOSER was even with last week, but that wasn't good news, as it was close to a season low.  Repeats of the serialized PARENTHOOD are always ugly, and last night's 0.7 was no exception.

ABC:  LAST MAN STANDING and BODY OF PROOF were at their usual unimpressive repeat levels, and the season finale of CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP couldn't leave town fast enough (The River takes its slot next week), setting a season low.

CBS:  All repeats, with 3d place finishes for both NCIS shows, but a win for UNFORGETTABLE in the battle of the reruns at 10PM.

Tonight is the last night before February sweeps, so ABC is all repeats, while the only new show on CBS is this year's installment of Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials, while NBC will have fresh episodes of its woeful Whitney/Chelsea duo.  FOX will hope to take advantage of the reduced competition with bigger numbers for American Idol, before its declining ratings becomes even more of a story than they already are.

On Thursday the February sweep will begin and suddenly original episodes will abound on the network schedules.  In the meantime, we have a night like last night where FOX was the only broadcast network with a full slate of fresh episodes.

The SKed: TUESDAY RATINGS January 24 (State of the Union)

State of the Union coverage (most of which is not actually rated because it is "sustaining" programming, i.e. no commercials) dominated the night.  The night only counts about half as much as a normal Tuesday in the season record books because only about 90 minutes on each network (60 on FOX) was commercially sponsored.

FOX won a night shortened by the State of the Union address with a repeat of Sunday's 11 pm post-NFC Championship American Idol (3.3), which did much better than a Glee repeat would have done and about as well as a Glee original would have scored.  The actual speech and Republican Response (from 9:00-10:30 pm ET) will not appear in the ratings, as they ran without commercials.  Last year on this night, FOX aired a Glee repeat (1.5) at 8 pm followed by the State of the Union at 9 pm.

NBC aired an original Biggest Loser at 8 pm and received a disappointing 2.1 rating.  Although the speech ratings will not count, NBC News had more viewers than the other news operations (NBC 2.0 rating, FOX News 1.8, and CBS and ABC 1.5 each from 9:00-10:30 in the fast nationals).  At 10:30, NBC News continued with speech analysis and won the time period (among the broadcast networks) with a 1.2.  The other networks rushed their news coverage off the air to squeeze a repeat comedy at 10:30.  The network sales divisions like putting sponsors in comedies over news programs, but (as almost always happens) the displaced comedies with incompatible lead ins did worse, each scoring only a 1.0 rating.  Last year on this night: Biggest Loser (3.2) from 8-9 pm and State of the Union analysis (1.3) from 10:30-11:00 pm.

ABC had a weak 8 pm (two repeat Last Man Standing episodes, each 1.4 rating) and a repeat Modern Family (1.0) at 10:30.  Last year on the same night last year: No Ordinary Family (1.1) and Cougar Town (0.7) at 10:30.
