STATUETTE STAKES: The Globes - TV

Possibly because the Golden Globes take place in much less proximity to the Emmys than they do to the Oscars, and thus aren't the crucial part of network gamesplaying that they are for the movie studios, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's TV awards have always tended to be more adventurous and genuine than the ones they give to movies.

A remarkable sign of the times:  only a single one of the 11 TV awards tonight went to a major broadcast network:  Best Comedy, to ABC's MODERN FAMILY.  9 of the other 10 awards went to cable, with the 11th to PBS for DOWNTON ABBEY.  And 7 of those 9 went to HBO, Showtime or Starz (FX and BBCAmerica each took 1 of the remaining 2). It goes without saying, sadly enough, that none of the shows or artists awarded were on host network NBC.

The Downton award was cause for celebration, as were the 2 major wins that Showtime's HOMELAND took for Drama and Best Drama Actress, to the spectacular Claire Danes.  Ditto for the universally lauded Peter Dinklage from GAME OF THRONES.

Most of the other acting awards celebrated shows that are more uneven, but the performances themselves are beyond reproach:  Matt LeBlanc's wry work as "himself" in Showtime's EPISODES, Jessica Lange's campy yet fully-committed turn in FX's wacky AMERICAN HORROR STORY, Idris Elba's riveting dark homicide detective in BBCAmerica's LUTHER, Kate Winslet's superbly textured portrayal of HBO's MILDRED PIERCE, and Kelsey Grammer as the uncompromisingly grim antihero of Starz's BOSS.  HBO's ENLIGHTENED and Laura Dern's lead role are acquired tastes that this viewer hasn't acquired, but one has to respect both the work and HFPA's willingness to honor it.

One question, though;  does anyone know what NBC will be airing the night after the Super Bowl?  After watching tonight's telecast for 3 hours, I find myself completely unaware of what they may have on tap.  Just wondering...

The Sked: The Skinny on the Nation's TV Markets

With all due respect to your geography class, the United States is really not made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia.  Readers of this website know it is a patchwork of 210 television markets, also known as Designated Market Areas (DMAs).  Each county in the nation is assigned to a DMA based on the residents’ viewing habits, and DMAs often cross state lines.

Once a year Nielsen (which measures local in addition to national television ratings) estimates the size of each market, and this season they range from #1 New York (with 7,387,810 homes) all the way down to tiny #210 Glendive, Montana (with 4,180 homes).  Exactly in the middle is #105 Lincoln, Nebraska (with 280,310 homes).  With market size disparity like that, it is no surprise that:

Three in ten Americans live in the top 10 markets
Half live in the top 25 markets
Eight in ten live in the top 75 markets

Why are TV markets important?  Knowing the size of markets and their growth rate is critical when analyzing national ratings, awarding or moving sports franchises, evaluating the performance of sporting events on television, developing strategies for political campaigns and advertising, and so on.  For example, if a network program is pre-empted in five local markets, it is critical to know which markets are not broadcasting a show.

The Top 25.  The chart below lists the top 25 DMAs, displaying their size (the number of households with television in the area), growth (percent change over a ten-year period since 2001-02), and momentum (the change in market ranking in ten years).  Values in red are indications of slow growth, while values in blue indicate rapid growth.  Black values are average.

Dallas-Ft Worth (#5) has moved up two spots in the rankings in a decade, but the Big-D will have to ratchet up the growth even more to catch the much larger Philadelphia (extremely unlikely).  The top four markets are so large their ranking has not changed in decades despite very sluggish growth.

TOP 25 TV MARKETS      2011-12    Growth   Ranking
                      Households  Since    Change
                      (millions)   2001    vs 2001

     Chicago          3.493     + 4%

    24  Raleigh-Durham   1.143     +22%      +5
    25  Charlotte        1.141     +20%      +2

Further, Phoenix (#13) is not done growing.  A decade ago Phoenix was #16, and it could very soon be knocking on the door of the top 10 because it is bunched up against similar-sized markets like Seattle and Detroit.  In fact, the Detroit (#11) area has the dubious distinction of being the only top 50 market to decline in population in the last decade.

North Carolina is the other high growth area (although it gets much less attention than the Southwest).  Raleigh-Durham (#24) and Charlotte (#25) have busted into the top 25 (with Raleigh vaulting five places in ten years), and like Phoenix they are very close in size to the markets immediately above them.  They should be Top 20 markets in a few seasons.

MID-SIZED MARKETS ON THE RISE.  In addition to the large-market growth stories, there are some spectacular examples from the rest of the top 75 markets.  Everyone would cite Las Vegas, which has risen from #51 ten years ago to #40 today, fueled by a 27% jump in market size over that period.  But an even bigger example is Ft. Myers-Naples, Florida, which has vaulted 14 places from #76 to #62 as a result of a 31% jump in the number of households in ten years.  Honorable mention goes to Austin (up seven places in the ranking and up 24%).  Here is a list of top gainers from markets 26-75 since 2001.

                         HHs MM   Growth   Rank Chg
    40  Las Vegas         .737     +27%      +11
    41  Harrisburg PA     .729     +18%      +5

    70  Tucson            .442     +13%      +3
    73  Spokane           .427     +12%      +5

MID-SIZED MARKETS ON THE DECLINE.  On the flip side, some parts of the country stagnate or even drop in population (like Detroit).  The biggest loser in the mid-markets is New Orleans, which has tumbled nine spots on the ranking chart (from #43 to #52), sporting a 1% decline in population for the entire market since 2001.  Clearly, Hurricane Katrina was a huge reason for this exodus.  Without a category five hurricane or other natural calamity, Memphis dropped a similar eight spots (from #41 to #49), and hard scrabble Charleston, West Virginia declined a full 3% in population since 2001.

                         HHs MM   Growth   Rank Chg
    27  Baltimore        1.097     + 7%      -3

The Sked: TUESDAY RATINGS October 4

It's the third week of the season and sampling starts to settle down and viewing patterns begin to emerge.  On Tuesday, New Girl remains the hit of the season, but other than that, the night is kind of blah.  FOX won with a good but not dominant 3.6 rating and CBS made it interesting with a 3.3.  Playing at a much lower level, ABC and NBC dueled at around a 2 rating.  And then The CW is headed for test pattern levels on the night.  Tuesday is kind of the season in miniature.

FOX scored another nightly victory last night, averaging a 3.6 Adult 18-49 rating.  Glee started the night with a 3.5, still down over a rating point from last year at this point.  The three-week track for the show is 4.0...3.7...3.5, a fairly typical trend for the shows on this night, where viewers seem a little bored with what is being offered.  New Girl maintains its status as the highest-rated show on the night (4.3), down a few tenths from last week but way ahead of last year's pace in the time period.  Raising Hope is stabile week to week (2.9).  On this night last year (10.5.2010), FOX narrowly won the night with a 3.4 rating: Glee (4.6), Raising Hope (2.5) and Running Wilde (1.7).

CBS was #2 last night with a 3.3 rating.  Each drama was down one- or two-tenths from last week, and the 10 pm hour has quietly turned into a horse race.  Although Unforgettable is still winning the hour, its margin of victory has declined from seven-tenths of a rating point to three-tenths this week.  On this night last year, CBS was a close #2 with a 3.3 rating: NCIS (3.8), NCIS: LA (3.4) and The Good Wife (2.5).

NBC literally flatlined at a 2.0 rating last night -- a 2.0 in all six half hours in primetime, a very consistent fourth-place performance.  A year ago on the third Tuesday of the season, NBC was #4 with a 2.4 rating: Biggest Loser (2.5) and Parenthood (2.1).

ABC was a weak third place with a 2.2 rating.  Although down from last season, the night has at least been stable week to week.  For example, the weekly track for Dancing with the Stars Results is 2.9...2.9...2.8.  Also, Body of Proof bounced back to a 2.1 last night after an atypical 1.8 last week.  On this night last year ABC was #3 with a 2.6 rating: No Ordinary Family (2.7), Dancing with the Stars Results (3.3) and Detroit 187 (1.7).

On The CW, both 90210 and Ringer are down to a very bad 0.6 rating.  Ringer has lost half its audience since its premiere (1.2 to a 0.6).  Yikes.

The Sked: SUNDAY RATINGS October 2

Aside from NFL Sunday Night Football, there is nothing close to a dominant show on the night.  A lot of mid-2 and low-3 rated shows.  Even with the football competition, the night is filled with opportunity to build off the moderate successes.

ABC saw declines week to week in their 9 and 10 pm dramas, with Desperate Housewives falling 0.3 from last week's premiere to a 2.9 and Pan Am declining 0.6 to a 2.5 (the exact level projected in our ShowBuzzDaily fall ratings forecast).  The within-show decline for Pan Am was much lower this week (from a 2.6 at 10:00-10:30 to a 2.4 at 10:30-11:00), suggesting the show might be finding its level in the mid-2 rating area.  Not a bad number, but not anything to celebrate.  For the night, ABC averaged a 2.3 rating (#4 ranking), down significantly year-to-year.  On this night last season (10.3.2010), ABC was #4 with a 3.0 rating: America's Funniest Home Videos (1.9), Extreme Makeover Home Edition (2.6), Desperate Housewives (4.4) and Brothers & Sisters (3.0).

CBS had the late afternoon NFL game, which spilled into primetime and gave 60 Minutes a boost (from a 2.3 last week to a 3.5 rating this week (although that 3.5 will probably be adjusted down to a 3.3 or so in the final nationals).  The rest of the schedule performed similarly to last week, with the award-winning Good Wife the lowest-rated Sunday scripted show on all networks.  Including the NFL runover CBS averaged a 3.1 from 7-11 pm.  On this night last year, CBS was #3 with a 3.1 rating: 60 Minutes (2.0), Amazing Race (3.4), Undercover Boss (4.0) and CSI: Miami (3.2).

The FOX animated comedies were down significantly week to week.  Last week FOX had a huge NFL rating in the 7 pm hour, but this week repeat comedies filled 7-8 pm (a 2.4 rated Cleveland Show at 7 and a 2.0 for The Simpsons at 7:30).  From 7-10 pm FOX averaged a 2.7 last night.  Such is the fall for FOX on Sundays as the ratings go up and down depending on which network (CBS or FOX) is carrying the national 4 pm NFL contest.  On this night last year, FOX was #2 with a football-inflated 4.7 rating: NFL 4 pm Runover (9.8 rating from 7:00-7:30), The OT (4.6 from 7:30-8:00), The Simpsons (4.2), Cleveland Show (3.1), Family Guy (4.0) and American Dad (3.0).

NBC's preliminary rating for the New York Jets-Baltimore Ravens game is a 7.3, which should go up to around an 8 rating in the final nationals (when all the time zones are accurately tabulated).  On this night last year, NBC was #1 with a 6.6 rating in primetime: the Sunday Night Football game averaged an 8.0 rating, while Football Night in America brought down the nightly number.

Exactly two weeks into the season, the battle for first remains fierce.  CBS and FOX each have around a 3.1 rating for the first 14 nights, while ABC is around a 2.6 and NBC is around a 2.5.  All numbers are pending final national ratings for Friday-Sunday.  The CW is averaging a 0.76 rating

Note:  the ratings estimates are for original episodes across the entire Fall (from mid-September through mid-December).  Generally, a series will premiere at a high level and then settle into a more normal number by week four-six.  The important number to look at as the season unfolds is the average-to-date column at the far right.  By the time episode four rolls around, look at the average of episodes one-four and you should have a pretty good idea how the fall -- and the entire season -- will sort out.

Special Sunday Note: CBS programs will be a few tenths higher on nights CBS has the 4 pm national NFL game (and the entire schedule is shifted about a half hour later) and a few tenths lower when CBS does not have the late game. When FOX has the 4 pm game, football will go to about 7:30 and The OT will fill until 8 pm, lifting The Simpsons a few tenths.  When FOX does not have the 4 pm game, the 8-10 comedies will be slightly lower and comedy repeats will fill the 7 pm hour.  New animated comedy Allen Gregory is scheduled to run at 8:30 on October 30, although it could very well be pushed to mid-season.

The Sked: FRIDAY RATINGS September 30

CBS narrowly won the second Friday of the season with a 1.5 Adult 18-49 rating (each of the three scripted programs was down 0.2 from premiere week), while NBC and FOX followed closely with a 1.4 rating, fueled by lower cost unscripted fare.  Dateline averaged a 1.6 over two hours and peaked at a 1.9 from 10:30-11:00, tying it with Blue Bloods in the lead-in to late local news.  Of most concern to CBS is the 8 pm entry A Gifted Man, which is already down to a 1.2 (hitting our ShowBuzzDaily fall ratings forecast).

Now 12 days into the fall season, FOX leads with a 3.29 rating, followed by CBS at a 3.12.  ABC is in third with a 2.66, and NBC trails at a 2.27.  The CW averages a 0.76 season to date.

The Sked: THURSDAY RATINGS September 29

With two Thursdays down in the young 2011-12 broadcast season, FOX is the #1 network on this important night (especially to heavy spending movie, retail and auto advertisers).  The X Factor is a not inexpensive show with a great pedigree.  Although it is not living up to its lofty expectations, it is getting the job done for the network by winning time periods.  In contrast, How to Be a Gentleman premiered last night on CBS and does not appear to be a keeper, and ABC's Charlie's Angels and NBC's Prime Suspect continue to struggle mightily.  Whitney is not a failure, but it is hard to term it anything close to a success yet.

CBS ranked #2 on the second Thursday of the season with a 3.0 Adult 18-49 rating, despite a killer performance by Big Bang Theory (4.8 rating, down only 0.1 from the strong premiere).  The news was tough at 8:30 as How to Be a Gentleman tumbled 44% to a 2.7 rating, below what $#*! My Dad Says did last year and below our bearish ShowBuzzDaily fall ratings forecast for the show.  This did not help the dramas Person of Interest (down 0.4 from premiere) and Mentalist (down 0.3).  This night last year (9.30.2010), CBS was #1 with a 3.3 rating: Big Bang Theory (4.4), $#*! My Dad Says (3.3), CSI (3.1), Mentalist (3.0).

ABC ranked #3 last night with a 2.6 demo rating.  Charlie's Angels sunk to a 1.5 rating (down a scary 0.6 from last week's debut), and the show is already below the fall ShowBuzzDaily forecast for the re-make.  Grey's Anatomy declined a similar amount to a 3.5 rating, more than a full rating point below its delivery in the time period last year at this point.  Private Practice, however, premiered at the same level it turned in last year.  On this night last year, ABC was #2 with a 2.8 rating: My Generation -- its final telecast (1.1), Grey's Anatomy (4.6), Private Practice (2.8).

NBC ranked #4 last night with a 2.1 rating.  The 8-9 pm comedies were actually up 0.1 from last week, but that was it for the good news.  The Office settled down to a 3.4 rating (down 0.5 from last week and not unexpected given the fairly heavily promoted premiere).  Whitney retained 73.5% of her lead-in, down substantially from 82% last week.  If the retention keeps dropping (especially from a smaller base), it will be a serious cause for concern.  Prime Suspect wilted to a 1.5 rating (down 0.3 from last week) and continues to be a distant third in the time period leading into late local news and the late night comedy line-up.  On this night last year, NBC was #3 with a 2.3 rating: Community (1.9), 30 Rock (2.6), The Office (3.7), Outsourced (2.8), Apprentice (1.3).

FOX was #1 last night with a 3.8 rating for The X Factor.  The show started at a 3.1 from 8:00-8:30 and built to a 4.3 in the 9:30 half hour.  Nevertheless, the Simon Cowell property declined week to week as it did Wednesday, with the Thursday edition falling from a 4.2 to a 3.8 (although still above our fall ratings projection).  Despite not meeting other lofty expectations, The X Factor has turned around FOX's fortunes on the night.  On this night last year FOX was #4 with a 2.2 rating: Bones (2.5 rating) and Fringe (1.9).

Through the first 11 nights of the season, FOX leads the way with a 3.43 rating, followed by CBS at a 3.25, ABC at a 2.79 and NBC at a 2.34 rating.  The CW is averaging a 0.77 season to date.

An important note:  the ratings estimates are for original episodes across the entire Fall (from mid-September through mid-December). CW shows are not currently estimated because we have incomplete historical data for the network's time periods.  CW estimates should be available later this season or early next season.

The Sked: WEDNESDAY RATINGS September 28

Put ABC's Suburgatory in the conditional win column, while Revenge is on a watch list to see where it settles.  FOX's The X Factor suffered a decline in week two, but the Simon Cowell performance show still powered FOX to a victory on the second Wednesday of the season.  CBS was down a bit at 9 pm, but otherwise fairly stable.  The bleeding continues at NBC.

ABC has launched another show successfully.  Suburgatory debuted to a 3.3 Adult 18-49 rating, building off the The Middle's 2.6 (which was down 0.5 from its premiere last week).  Modern Family also declined 0.5 from its premiere to a 5.6 rating, and Happy Endings returned to the schedule with a 3.2 rating.  (That's a hefty drop from its lead-in, but in this tough network TV environment, a 3.2 at 9:30 is not a disaster.)  Week two of Revenge declined to a 2.7 (down a full 0.7 from the premiere), but more disturbing is that it dropped from a 2.9 in the first half hour to a 2.6 from 10:30-11:00 pm.  Going forward, Revenge will be lucky to hold on to a mid-2 rating week in and week out.  We need a few more weeks to see where the audience sorts out.  ABC averaged a 3.4 rating for the night (in second place), up substantially at 10 pm and up in the 8:30-10:00 comedy half hours.  On the same night last year (9.29.2010), ABC was in fourth place for the night, averaging a 2.4 rating: The Middle (2.5), Better with You (2.2), Modern Family (4.6), Cougar Town (2.8), The Whole Truth (1.2).

FOX won the night with a 4.0 for The X Factor, which turned in a 3.6 from 8-9 pm and a 4.3 at 9 pm.  This is down from a 4.4 rating last week but up significantly from last year.  This night last year, FOX was in second place with a 2.9 rating: Hell's Kitchen (2.8) at 8 pm and Hell's Kitchen at 9 pm (3.0).  Next week will be incredibly important for The X Factor -- can it hold at the 3.9/4.0 level or sink to the mid-3 rating range?

CBS is a close third or tied for second for the night with a 3.2 or 3.3 rating, depending on rounding.  Week to week, Survivor was down a tick to a 3.1 rating, while Criminal Minds dropped 0.5 to a 3.6.  If anyone was hurt by the ESPN coverage last night of Major League Baseball's incredible final night of the regular season (when the two wild card spots were decided in three very close games on the various ESPN networks), it would be older-skewing CBS.  CSI dropped 0.2 to a 3.0 but won the time period thanks to decline of RevengeCBS won the second Wednesday last year with a modest 3.2 rating: Survivor (3.5), Criminal Minds (3.6), Defenders (2.5).

NBC has not found bottom yet in the 8 pm comedy hour.  Up All Night dropped again to a 2.1 rating (down 0.3), and Free Agents hit a lowly 1.0 rating (down 0.3).  Harry's Law was steady week to week with a 1.2, while Law & Order: SVU drifted down to a 2.0 (down 0.4).  The Peacock averaged a fourth-place 1.6 for the evening.  NBC was in third place on this night last year with a 2.5 rating: Undercovers (1.6), Law & Order: SVU (2.8), Law & Order: Los Angeles premiere (3.2).

The CW's reality shows perked up a bit.  H8R was up 0.2 to a 0.6 rating (a Kim Kardashian episode), and America's Next Top Model was up one tenth to a 0.8.

Season to date (through ten nights of the season), FOX leads with a 3.4 rating, followed by CBS with a 3.3.  ABC remains in third (2.8) and NBC brings up the rear (2.4).  The CW is averaging a 0.7 season to date.

The Sked: CABLE RATINGS September 20-26

The power of the NFL is in full display in this week's top cable program chart.  ESPN's Monday Night Football game featuring the Dallas Cowboys at the Washington Redskins scored a mammoth 7.2 Adult 18-49 rating, with over 17 million viewers 2+ watching in an average minute.  MTV's Jersey Shore placed second with about half the young adult rating, a still potent 3.5.  Comedy Central did well with a new comedy special starring Jeff Dunham in "Controlled Chaos", and the comedy clip series Tosh.0 returned with almost a 2 rating.

The much publicized Boardwalk Empire returned to HBO Sunday with a 1.3 rating.  Solid by cable standards, the Boardwalk number nonetheless pales in comparison to its flagship True Blood.  Click "read more" to see the complete weekly chart.

The Sked: TUESDAY RATINGS September 27

Zooey Deschanel in FOX's New Girl
The second Tuesday of the new season was relatively surprise-free.  FOX's New Girl established itself as the hit of the new season, and CBS turned in a reliable performance thanks to the NCIS pair, although Unforgettable looks shaky at best.  NBC and ABC are floundering thanks to aging reality franchises.

FOX's New Girl continues to be the toast of the new season, turning in a 4.4 Adult 18-49 rating in its second week (down only 0.4 of a rating point from its strong premiere).  New Girl built a solid 22% from its Glee lead-in (3.6 rating), while Raising Hope ended the night by drifting down to a still respectable 2.9 rating.  FOX won the night overall with a 3.6 rating.  On this night one year ago (9.28.2010), FOX won the night with a 4.2 rating.  Glee hit a 5.9 rating at 8 pm, while Raising Hope did a very decent 3.1 and Running Wilde ended the night with a thud (1.9 rating).  So FOX is down year to year (especially because of the cooling Glee), but the network remains the tallest midget on the night, thanks to New Girl

CBS placed second last night with a 3.4 demo rating.  NCIS scored a 4.2 in its second outing (down only 0.1 from last week), NCIS: LA nabbed a 3.5 (also down only 0.1 from last week), and Unforgettable again won the 10 pm time period with a 2.5 (although it was down a disturbing 0.4 from its debut).  On the second Tuesday of the season last year, CBS finished in second place with an identical 3.4 rating for the night.  NCIS set the table with a 4.1 rating, followed by NCIS: Los Angeles at a 3.7 rating and The Good Wife at a 2.5 rating.

NBC averaged a 2.2 last night, good for a weak tie for third place.  Biggest Loser built a touch from a 2.2 rating at 8 pm to a 2.3 at 9 pm.  Parenthood delivered a 2.2 rating (up 0.1 from last week's episode).  A year ago last night, NBC finished in fourth place with a 2.5 demo rating.  The first hour of Biggest Loser rated a 2.5, with the second hour building to a 3.0 rating.  Parenthood ended the night with a 2.0 rating.

ABC's Tuesday has really fallen apart.  The 8 pm Dancing recap show is a disaster at a 1.8 rating, and the live results show at 9 pm is a mediocre 2.8 rating (despite the "controversy" about Nancy Grace's wardrobe malfunction.....yikes).  Body of Proof is getting colder -- a 1.9 rating, which sets a series low.  ABC averaged a 2.2 on the second Tuesday of the season.  A year ago on this night, ABC averaged a 3.0 rating for the night, good for third place.  No Ordinary Family premiered with a 3.2 rating, Dancing with the Stars Results hit a 3.8, and Detroit 187's second episode ended the night on a sour night with a 2.1 rating.

On The CW, the third week of 90210 and Ringer have settled in at a 0.8 and 0.9 rating, respectively.  Nothing for the other networks to worry about.

Season to date (the first nine nights of the young season), FOX and CBS remain in a tight battle for #1.  FOX is averaging a 3.33, followed closely by 3.28 for CBS.  ABC is in third with a 2.75, and NBC is far behind with a 2.45.  Playing in a different universe, The CW is averaging 0.72 season to date.

The Sked: SUNDAY RATINGS September 25

With an "average" NFL game on NBC (if you consider a 7+ rating in primetime average), the other networks premiered their Sunday lineups with only moderate success at best.

ABC got off to a very sluggish start with the two-hour premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (starting in the low-1 demo rating in the 7 pm hour and ending at the low-2 rating range from 8-9 pm).  Desperate Housewives returned with a 3.2 Adult 18-49 rating (below our ShowBuzzDaily forecast for the fall), while Pan Am held most of the audience and turned in a 3.1 rating for its debut.  By half hour, Housewives did a 3.2 from 9:00-9:30 and dipped to a 3.1 from 9:30-10:00.  Then, Pan Am picked up steam from 10:00-10:30 to a 3.2, but descended to a 3.0 from 10:30-11:00.  The two-tenths decline in the second half hour is not unusual for a new 10 pm show and is not an immediate cause for concern.  The true test for the Jet Age drama will come in weeks two and three.  Assume ABC is relieved but not overjoyed with this performance

At CBS, four returning shows premiered last night.  While the 7-9 pm portion of the night is in okay shape, the 9-11 dramas are struggling.  The venerable 60 Minutes and Amazing Race premiered above our estimates for the fall -- in the high-2 or 3 rating range.  But then the young adults made a move for other networks at 9 pm, with The Good Wife and CSI: Miami sinking to a low-2 rating.  There are plenty of Adults 50+ watching the CBS dramas, but younger viewers are just not that interested. CBS has to be concerned that the The Good Wife is looking more and more like Murder, She Wrote in terms of its audience profile.

FOX is off to a good start with "Animation Domination" from 8-10 pm.  On a week when FOX had the 4 pm late afternoon NFL national game, the 7 pm hour was filled with plenty of NFL viewers (close to an 8 rating from 7:00-7:30 and close to a 5 watching The OT highlight show from 7:30-8:00).  All four animated comedies came in well above our fall forecasts for the shows.  Although the ratings for the comedies will be down in weeks when CBS hasa the late football game, this is still a very good start and The Simpsons should settle in at a mid-3 rating and Family Guy at a high-3 rating.  FOX should be very pleased.

Very preliminary numbers for premiere week have FOX winning with a 3.2 or 3.3 rating (depending on rounding) and CBS in second place with a 3.1.  ABC is on third with a 2.7 or 2.8, and NBC brings up the rear with a 2.5 or maybe 2.6, depending on how the final nationals come in for Sunday Night Football.
