A preview of next season's schedule?

CBS: The network experimented with a new episode of THE MENTALIST at 9PM, and while the 2.0 rating was 20% below the show's Thursday season low, Friday offers fewer available eyeballs, so a decline was to be expected. Mentalist nevertheless considerably outrated what CSI NY and A Gifted Man have been doing at 9PM, easily winning its timeslot, pushing Grimm near a series low, and helping BLUE BLOODS inch up to a 1.8. And that wasn't even CBS' best news of the night: in the 4-way unscripted battle at 8PM, UNDERCOVER BOSS was the winner by far with a 2.2, the highest rated broadcast on any network last night.

NBC: Against Mentalist, GRIMM's 1.5 was 0.1 above its series low. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? was a weak 3rd place at 8PM with 1.0 (tying a repeat on FOX), but DATELINE, while behind Blue Bloods, nosed out ABC for 2d place at 10PM.

ABC: SHARK TANK managed 2d place at 8PM (although a big 0.7 behind CBS), but PRIMETIME and 20/20 fell to third the rest of the evening.

FOX: A repeat KITCHEN NIGHTMARES tied for 3d in both of its hours.

CW: Repeats were at a typical (for CW repeats) 0.3-0.4.

Tonight continues to be something of a bonanza for Saturday original programming (as long as quality doesn't come into play): THE FIRM on NBC, Q'VIVA! THE CHOSEN on FOX, and a 20/20 invitingly titled My Extreme Affliction. Yum! Then tomorrow, all the networks are new (with a return of Dylan Baker's Hannibal Lecter-ish character on THE GOOD WIFE), with the main "events" being HARRY'S LAW return to the NBC schedule at 8PM and the 2d episode test for ABC's GCB at 10PM.

THE SKED'S FRIDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Adieu, GIFTED MAN.

CBS: The season finale of A GIFTED MAN ticked up a bit to a 1.4, but while that would be great news for, say, Fringe, don't get your hopes up for Man's renewal. A far more telling sign: we've talked here before about "second position" pilot deals for actors, and Gifted Man's female lead Rachelle Levebre just signed for one produced by Man's own production company (and that being CBS Studios, not unacquainted with its network). CBS won the night's other hours (UNDERCOVER BOSS slightly up, BLUE BLOODS even) to tie for the evening win.

ABC: SHARK TANK was down slightly at 8PM, but after that the night improved sharply, with 0.3 and 0.4 respective rises for PRIMETIME and 20/20, pulling the network to a tie for the night.

NBC: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?, with a Reba McEntire episode (and possibly benefiting as well from the repeat on FOX) leaped half a ratings point from last week (although that still put it in 3d place for the hour), which helped propel GRIMM up 0.2 to tie for the lead at 9PM. DATELINE lost the newsmagazine battle and fell to 3d place at 10PM.

FOX:: With February sweeps over, the network slipped into repeats, falling into 4th place for the night with KITCHEN NIGHTMARES.

CW: Twin 0.3 ratings for repeats of NIKITA and SUPERNATURAL.

Tonight, a rarity: new Saturday night series programming! FOX premieres the Latin dance talent-search series Q'VIVA! THE CHOSEN from (not so incidentally) producer and Idol co-host Jennifer Lopez. It's not clear why ABC cares about bragging rights to Saturdays, but the network will try to blunt Q'Viva with an all-new 2-hour 20/20. NBC continues its sad burn-off of THE FIRM. Sunday is so crammed with original programming, sweeps might as well be going on. The major event, of course, is ABC's premiere of GCB (see Mitch Metcalf's ratings prediction).

THE SKED'S FRIDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

FRINGE, having watched Monty Python & the Holy Grail, shouts "I'm not dead!" as the gravediggers try to take it away.

CBS: An extremely soft win for the night (1.6 average). UNDERCOVER BOSS was down 0.4 from its season premiere, A GIFTED MAN (in its penultimate episode, at least for this season) was down 0.2, and only BLUE BLOODS was up a slight 0.1 from last week, when it aired against ABC's Whitney Houston tribute.

FOX: FRINGE was up 0.1, and while that doesn't sound like much (and isn't), at least it was in a tightly squeezed pack at 9PM (1.5-1.4-1.3-1.2). The show now takes 4 weeks off, to return at the end of March with what it hopes won't be its final 8 episodes in this timeline and universe.

NBC: GRIMM continues to be a very niche success, at the top of that 9PM scrum by a bare 0.1 and showing no signs that it could thrive in the tougher competition that exists Sun-Thurs. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? is flopping at 8PM with a 1.0, and DATELINE barely won the newsmagazine battle at 10PM by 0.1.

ABC: The network was in 2d place by only 0.1 at both 8PM and 9PM (SHARK TANK particularly benefited from Undercover Boss' decline), but 20/20 slumped without the buzz of the Whitney Houston story.

CW: Repeats, although it's worth nothing that the 0.4 scored by NIKITA and SUPERNATURAL was only 0.1 below what some of the network's new episodes have been rating.

Tonight is repeat hell, except for NBC's burn-off of THE FIRM episodes (another kind of hell). Tomorrow night is likely to be joyful for fans of black-and-white silent French films, and depressing for everyone else. (It's a mark of just how dreary this year's Oscars are that the media has spent 2 days obsessing about Sacha Baron Cohen's publicity stunt for his new movie instead of the awards.) All the other broadcast networks are staying away, as are many scripted cable locales, with the exceptions of giant hit WALKING DEAD on AMC, and enormous flop LUCK on HBO.

THE SKED'S SUNDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Americans, faced with tragedy, gather around their television sets. For the death of Whitney Houston, that meant the GRAMMYS.

CBS: The sudden (and not so sudden) death of Whitney Houston turned the Grammys into An Event that transcended the usual awards-plus-glamor formula, and the result was a giant 14.1 rating, more than 2 rating points higher than last year's Academy Awards (and given this year's Oscar prospects, almost certain to be the season's highest-rated awards show). Beyond the ratings, the show will undoubtedly give a huge boost in sales to the artists (especially the night's It Girl, Adele) who performed or won awards during the broadcast. (A side note: although advertisers are guaranteed a minimum rating for their commercials, and receive compensation if those numbers aren't hit, they get the full benefit of unexpectedly high ratings, meaning that all the sponsors of last night's show received windfalls worth millions of dollars.)

ABC: Every other network suffered accordingly, and none more so than ABC, whose female-skewing lineup is geared to compete with NFL Football, but not with a colossus that attracts that same audience. ONCE UPON A TIME was down about 10% from the episodes that competed with NFL playoff games, and that was the good news. DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES hit a low that was 30% below its previous all-time bottom, and the penultimate episode of PAN AM was an embarrassing 0.7.

FOX: Young guy-skewing shows weren't immune either, and FOX hit season lows across the board. Its animated schedule was down 20% even from the weeks when CBS aired the late NFL playoff games.

NBC: The network had basically given up on this night already (it'll launch the new season of Celebrity Apprentice next week), so comparatively speaking, it had the least to lose. DATELINE and a FEAR FACTOR special did a 1.6 and 1.5, respectively, and on a cost-benefit basis that was probably the most effective competition of the night.

Tonight NBC bites its fingernails, as it waits to find out how many people will come back for a second helping of THE VOICE and, especially, SMASH. This still being sweeps, the shows face all-new competition on every network.

Not a great night for bubble shows.

CBS: On a night where CSI NY and BLUE BLOODS both won their hours and were up slightly from last week, A GIFTED MAN went down 0.1 and tied for 3rd place at 8PM.

FOX: KITCHEN NIGHTMARES and FRINGE were both down 0.1 from last week, but while that still left Kitchen comfortably in 2d place for its hour, Fringe matched a series low 1.1 and continued to make it hard for FOX to consider renewing it.

NBC: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE, with a heavily-promoted "Marisa Tomei murder mystery" episode, held steady with its season premiere, and then things got even better. GRIMM was up 0.2 from last week, just 0.1 from the lead in its hour, and DATELINE (some big story/interview this week?) was up a whopping 0.4 from last week, beating out 20/20.

ABC: SHARK TANK got the night off to a great start, up 0.3 for the week and winning the 8PM slot. PRIMETIME was up 0.1, and while that was only enough for 3rd place at 9PM, it was a closely-bunched trio. But then 20/20 fell flat at 10PM, down 0.3 from last week.

CW: NIKITA held at a 0.5, and although SUPERNATURAL was down 0.1, its 0.7 is still solid for CW.

Tomorrow night's big event is the GRAMMYS, the one night of the year CBS pretends it's hip. The show scored a 9.9 last year (up a bit from the year before), and faces all-new episodes on ABC and FOX, plus a 2-hour FEAR FACTOR special on NBC.

THE SKED'S FRIDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Say goodnight, CHUCK.

NBC: Fittingly enough, Chuck bid adieu to the airwaves with a decent (season-high) but unremarkable 1.3 rating that didn't win either hour but was in the hunt. Creatively, too, the show stayed true to its vision of a grand romance masquerading as a sci-fi/spy thriller parody, silly but also unapologetically emotional. There are shows a lot worse on the air--and many of them are on NBC. However, the sub-Grimm number didn't help Dateline, which fell to 3rd place at 10PM.

ABC: A strong night, with wins across the board (it helped that CBS was in reruns).

FOX: Even though its KITCHEN NIGHTMARES lead-in was down for the night, FRINGE crept up a bit, as its convoluted (even for Fringe) alternate timelines/universes plotline finally seems to be going somewhere.

CBS: Reruns, with 4th place finishes at 8PM and 9PM, and a 2d place for BLUE BLOODS at 10PM.

CW: ...and more reruns, both at a 0.4.

Tonight FOX airs 2 live hours of mixed-martial arts UFC combat, and tomorrow features the Pro Bowl on NBC and a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie on ABC. Most interesting will be the official debut (after a "preview" last month) of LUCK on HBO.

THE SKED'S FRIDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

Not a lot of viewer enthusiasm on a night when nothing topped a 1.8.

NBC: CHUCK continued to lurch toward its January 27 finale with a 0.9. The network's issue comes at 9PM: one obvious move would be to yank the horribly rated THE FIRM off Thursday and put GRIMM in that slot, but Grimm hit a series low 1.4 last night, making it harder and harder to consider the show a "hit," even on NBC. Leave Grimm on Friday where not much is expected from it (but where returns are low), or try to make it more of a mainstream success (and risk losing it altogether)? Tough call. DATELINE wound up the night with an unimpressive 3rd place finish.

ABC: A tie for the night's win, sparked by the final regular-series hour of EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION and a Madonna interview on 20/20 that both gave the network a 1.7 in their hours (tying for 1st place at 9PM, 2d place by 0.1 at 10PM), following a 1.4 for the first hour of the Extreme Makeover finale.

CBS: Shared 1st place for the night, with a 1.3 for A GIFTED MAN at 8PM but better results the rest of the night.

FOX: KITCHEN NIGHTMARES started the night off well with a 1.7 that won the 8PM hour, but then FRINGE fell to 4th place at 9PM, tying its 1.1 series low. Let's hope the producers have an endgame in mind for the rest of this season, because the show's tenuous lease on life may be nearing an end.

CW: Both NIKITA and SUPERNATURAL were down from last week to 0.5 and 0.6, respectively.

Saturday night will be dominated, possibly to a historic extent, by CBS's coverage of the Tim Tebow/Tom Brady Armageddon Bowl. ABC will try to zig a little bit to that massive zag by airing the Miss America pageant. In late night, Daniel Radcliffe (who has a movie opening) will test his post-Harry Potter appeal by hosting Saturday Night Live, with music guest Lana Del Rey. Sunday will feature debuts by CBS's Undercover Boss and FOX's animated version of Napoleon Dynamite, but the night's big event will be NBC's Ricky Gervais-hosted Golden Globes.

THE SKED'S FRIDAY NETWORK SCORECARD

With reruns and holiday specials occupying most of the airwaves, NBC was able to grab a rare non-Sunday win.

NBC: The Peacock was the only network airing original scripted programming, and although CHUCK and GRIMM were each a bit down (to 0.9 and 1.5, respectively), that was enough, combined with DATELINE's 1.3, to take the night.

ABC: EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION, now officially on its way out as a regular series, held steady with a 1.3 average over its 2 hours. The 20/20 at 10PM, however, got crushed by Dateline, down to a 0.9.

FOX: Repeats of Charlie Brown, Ice Age and Simpsons holiday specials couldn't do better than 0.9-1.2.

CBS: An all-repeat night, in the 0.8-1.0 range.

CW: Winter repeats continue.

On Sunday, CBS airs its 3-hour SURVIVOR finale/reunion extravaganza, against the football game NBC had to take (Baltimore vs San Diego) because they weren't allowed to air the one they wanted (New England vs. ~~God Tim Tebow~~ Denver), along with repeats and holiday specials on the other networks (plus the finale of ALLEN GREGORY). All the pop culture noise, though, is over at Showtime, which has the DEXTER season finale followed by what's become, despite its seemingly blah 0.5 rating, the event of the season: the season finale of HOMELAND, probably the most eagerly awaited last episode since Breaking Bad's earlier in the year. Don't screw it up, Homeland producers!

THE SKED: Friday Ratings - Network Scorecard

A quiet night, but there was some stirrings of change thanks to ABC.

ABC: EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION made its Friday debut (it will ultimately be joined by Shark Tank), and while the 8PM episode didn't do much, the show zoomed forward at 9PM to come within 0.1 of CSI NY. That was followed by a promotable 20/20 (interview with a Bernie Madoff relative), which made the most of its lead-in to take the hour.

CBS: Despite the ABC onslaught, their numbers remained very solid (although in A GIFTED MAN's case, at a low level), with nothing moving more than 0.1 from last week.

NBC: Next week, the network will make its real Friday push with the debuts of CHUCK and GRIMM. 8PM remained low-rated reruns, but DATELINE was bruised by the ABC shows, down by a third from last week. (One sidelight to NBC's decision to push the Grimm premiere by a week is that critics are by and large ignoring the delay and reviewing the show this weekend, partly because it ties in so well with their reviews of Sunday's similarly-themed Once Upon A Time. The reviews have been mixed, so this may not end up meaning much, but as a result, when Grimm really does arrive next week, comparatively few reviews will run in the media to greet it.)

FOX: KITCHEN NIGHTMARES won its hour steadily, and the network ran a repeat of FRINGE at 9PM.

CW: NIKITA was up, SUPERNATURAL was down, but in both cases by only 0.1, so hard to make any judgments.

The Sked: FRIDAY RATINGS October 14

Friday patterns are really set in stone. CBS won another Friday with a 1.6 rating (same as last week) with three pricey scripted dramas: A Gifted Man (1.3 rating, up 0.1 from last week), CSI: NY (1.7, up 0.1) and Blue Bloods (1.7, down 0.2).

FOX was #2 on the night with a 1.3 rating (down 0.2 from last week): Kitchen Nightmares (1.4, down 0.2 from last week) and Fringe (1.2, down 0.1).

NBC stumbled badly at 8 with repeats of The Office (0.7) and Parks & Recreation (0.5). However, Dateline built all the way from a 1.2 from 9:00-9:30 to a 1.8 from 10:30-11:00, in fact edging Blue Bloods by a tenth of a rating point to win the half hour leading into the late local news. For the night, NBC scored a 1.2 rating (down 0.1 from last week).

In contrast, ABC did reasonably well with its repeat comedy (Last Man Standing hour and Modern Family at a 1.3, with Suburgatory at a 1.1), but 20/20 could not take advantage of it (holding at a 1.2 rating for the 10 pm hour). The network ended up tying NBC for Friday night.

On The CW, Nikita was up 0.1 from last week to a 0.6, and Supernatural averaged a consistent 0.7 rating.

The Sked: FRIDAY RATINGS September 30

CBS narrowly won the second Friday of the season with a 1.5 Adult 18-49 rating (each of the three scripted programs was down 0.2 from premiere week), while NBC and FOX followed closely with a 1.4 rating, fueled by lower cost unscripted fare. Dateline averaged a 1.6 over two hours and peaked at a 1.9 from 10:30-11:00, tying it with Blue Bloods in the lead-in to late local news. Of most concern to CBS is the 8 pm entry A Gifted Man, which is already down to a 1.2 (hitting our ShowBuzzDaily fall ratings forecast).

Now 12 days into the fall season, FOX leads with a 3.29 rating, followed by CBS at a 3.12. ABC is in third with a 2.66, and NBC trails at a 2.27. The CW averages a 0.76 season to date.

An important note: the ratings estimates are for original episodes across the entire Fall (from mid-September through mid-December). Generally, a series will premiere at a high level and then settle into a more normal number by week four-six. The important number to look at as the season unfolds is the average-to-date column at the far right. By the time episode four rolls around, look at the average of episodes one-four and you should have a pretty good idea how the fall -- and the entire season -- will sort out. CW shows are not currently estimated because we have incomplete historical data for the network's time periods. CW estimates should be available later this season or early next season.

THE SKED: NBC Postpones Friday

Deadline reports that NBC has pushed the launch of its scripted Friday shows CHUCK and GRIMM by a week, from October 21 to October 28. Supposedly this is to give the series the benefit of a 2-day Halloween marketing push to begin with the network airing holiday-themed episodes of its Thursday comedies on October 27, although both the Chuck and Grimm premieres have been in the can without Halloween content since before this idea came up. (At least Grimm's genre fits in with a Halloween theme.) One might wonder if NBC was happy with the solid (for a Friday) 2 rating Dateline gave them last Friday, and isn't in any hurry to move on to the untested Grimm and on-its-last-legs Chuck. But we'll give them the benefit of the doubt...

THE SKED: SHOWBUZZDAILY’S FALL 2011/12 FRIDAY TV SCHEDULE

Welcome to ShowbuzzDaily's coverage of the upcoming TV schedules for the 2011/12 TV season! Above you see our guide to what to expect on Friday nights this Fall: the numbers are our projected Adults 18-49 ratings for each show; the capitalized titles are the new shows; and italics are for shows changing their time slots. Here’s our analysis of what will really be going on behind the numbers:

Friday, with its dwindling, aging audiences, isn't the place for networks to launch ambitious new shows. (Although thanks, FOX, for renewing FRINGE.)

It is, however, a good night to relocate shows on the decline. UNDERCOVER BOSS started off very strong on Sundays, but it's been steadily heading lower, and it's time for the show to find a more comfortable resting place on Fridays. Similarly, we see the big event of the night as being CBS's relocation of the original CSI from Thursday to Friday. It's still a solid show, but its ratings have been going in the wrong direction since William L. Petersen left, and that's unlikely to reverse itself. On Friday, it can provide a strong lead-in to BLUE BLOODS, which has done marginal ratings, but has value for CBS in international and cable markets.

With Kathy Bates in the lead, HARRY'S LAW started out skewing old, especially by NBC standards, and while it does have a substantial audience in the older demo, this is the only night it really provides value for NBC.

Oddly, despite the fact that the other 4 networks have nearly invisible 18-49 audiences on Fridays, The CW has done nicely with its pairing of SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL. Now that SMALLVILLE has flown off to Metropolis, SUPERNATURAL should slide to the open 8PM slot and lead in to a new show at 9. The most compatible of The CW's pilots seems to be AWAKENING, a hot-girl version of THE WALKING DEAD (that description probably sounds better than the show is likely to be).
