Director: Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Sleepy Hollow)
& Mike Johnson (The Devil Went Down to Georgia)
Voices: Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Emily Watson
UK / USA, 2005
Seen: July 6, 2006 on TMN on Demand
Reason to see: I'm a big Tim Burton fan
My first association of this film is that it was showing during the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival 1-2 weeks prior to its theatrical release, as well as seeing a charming display in a jewelry store on Bloor Street for the time during that time. Who would have thought that would ever happen?
I am sad to say that it was not all what I expected. I was not expecting muscial numbers, I had a hard time understanding the words during the musical numbers. It reminded me too much of The Nightmare Before Christmas, I wasn't impressed with the gender stereotypes - ok the female character's stereotyping. I don't think I could fairly say Johnny Depp's character was a stereotype. But, on the other hand I'm not a huge fan of animation and it can lose my interest quickly so I would have to say I'm not the best judge of this film as I don't believe I'm the target market.
Shannon's Overall View:
I was dissapointed
I might give it another try
I would recommend it to people interested in dark-ish animated film
